1. Actually, he didn't.
He was just asking the daughters what they thought when Kerry has been accused of being effete or cold or patrician, and they responded by explaining that he's not like that at all; he's warm and compassionate. King did not accuse Kerry of being effete.

12. Well, then I look forward to King asking the Booze Twins
Yeah, sure King wasn't saying that Kerry was effete; he was just asking a question! You know, "some people say" that Kerry is effete. Well Larry old boy, some people say (and I'm one of them, so you may quote me) that George W. Bush exhibits definite simian characteristics, and looks every inch the spoiled frat boy with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement that marks all the absolute worst features of the Ugly American. What do Jenna and Bar Jr. think about that?

2. Larry was asking them about the labels that were smeared onto Kerry.
King did nothing wrong.

3. What kind of word is "effete," anyway??
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 08:45 PM by ClassWarrior
Isn't it French?? I understand from the other posts here that Lar's not at fault, but I've heard other RWers use the word. Talk about a pot-kettle dynamic!

11. Ok, yes, it is, re Agnew - he resigned in disgrace

Here's some info on Agnew, who called the media an "effete corps of impudent snobs" back in the days when the media had some backbone:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiro_Agnew>

"On October 10, 1973, Agnew became the second Vice President to resign the office. Unlike John C. Calhoun, who resigned to take a seat in the Senate, Agnew resigned after pleading nolo contendere (no contest) to a criminal charge of tax evasion, part of a scheme where he allegedly accepted $29,500 in bribes during his tenure as governor of Maryland. Agnew was fined $10,000 and put on three years' probation. He was later disbarred by the State of Maryland."

Now that's effete.

5. Actually, the correct quote is "Eastern effete snob" . . .
This is a quote from Spiro Agnew back before he went to jail.

9. correcter quote: "effete corps of impudent snobs"
Agnew (actually probably written by Safire), referring to the media, described them as "an effete corps of impudent snobs, a tiny fraternity of privileged men elected by no one and enjoying a monopoly sanctioned and licensed by the government. They are nattering nabobs of negativism."

onenote

7. King tries to be non partisan but it doesn't work for me
When he talks to Bush and wife he is all smiles and happy and really enjoying the talk. To Kerry, Edwards, or their daughters, its all business like when you are at work and just doing what you have to do but not enjoying it.
