A question about the phrase "to seal the deal" |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 09:16 PM by demdem
Candy Crowley just did a report and at the end of it she said the Democrats privatly think Clinton can seal the deal for Kerry. Now for the Kerry camp to say seal the deal, doesnt this indicate that they think they are winning. There is no deal to seal if you believe you are behind right. Please correct me if I a wrong. I have heard on several occasions including Juan Williams on NPR today that Kerry's internals are very good in OH,PA and FL.

Seal the deal, in this context, means to assure victory. To be more specific, I think she was referring to the idea that undecideds tend to go for the challenger, but only if the challenger can make a convincing case that he (sorry, but they've been all "he's" so far) is qualified to be president. He has to "sell" himself to the undecideds.
We sealed the deal.
