My Inflammatory LTTE Got Printed
I thought it was too "hot" but they added the "life and death" headline to it and put it next to a cartoon of a flag-draped coffin labelled "Last Man to Die" and Shrub labelled "Last Man to Know":

Nov. 2: A matter of life and death

To the editor:

A few weeks ago, a slacker and I got into a two-hour discussion over politics. He was voting for Bush, but said he votes for the man, not the party.

His final flourish was to say, “Look, you know good and well that it doesn’t matter who wins: The day after the election, you and I are still going to be going about our business, no matter who wins.”

At that point a fellow in his mid-20s took over the shift. He was shipping to Iraq on Oct. 26. Although this particular individual is the cleanest-cut, hardest working, most helpful person you’d want to know, these things don’t matter for the purposes of the discussion. It could be anybody.

The slacker had smiled and smiled all the way through. Politics was not a serious topic for him. I said to him, “If this dude comes back dead in a box, if you ever see me again, don’t come up to me, don’t greet me, don’t talk to me ever again.”

Finally, a nerve was struck. He flared up angrily and said, “You crossed a line! You can’t blame me for that just for voting for Bush.”

I said, “Oh, yes I can. You’ve been taking this as a big joke. Politics is about serious things: This dude’s life or death. Old people’s medications. Other people making a living.”

Predictably, this was the end of that particular conversation.

2. Waah! You crossed a line!
Excellent response to your devil-may-care friend. Yes, there ARE real world consequences that ensue based on who is elected. Your friend is a pinhead; why in the world would someone as wealthy as George W. Bush and Dick Cheney spend so much time and other people's money to get elected to jobs that barely pay them what the severance packages from their various failed business ventures pay them? Unless they could steal more money that way?

And having to come face to face (literally) with the possible consequences of his foolish attitude, his first response is not "Gee, I need to re-think what I'm doing" but "You crossed a line!" The guy's a dumbass.

8. Reprogramming
We need to round these fools up, strap them down like little Alex in "A Clockwork Orange", and force them to watch Fahrenheit 911.

15. What is it with the CROSSED THE LINE shit?
It's the GOP way of WHINING when you hit a nerve, near as I can tell. Anytime they can't win on the merits, they toss out that "crossed the line" bullshit. Hey, aren't we fightin' a war on terra? Those 'terrists' don't respect any lines, after all, the Chechens are pouring across the Mexican border to blow up our schools, remember???

In the Navy, when you 'cross the line,' you have to crawl through shit and kiss the belly of the fattest chief on the ship, and for your effort and personal degradation you get a brightly colored certificate to proudly display, that tells everyone that you are cooler than they are! Those clowns know nothing about crossing the line!!!

9. My sister already quit talking to me
The last discussion we had was after the first debate. I asked who she thought won. She thought it was pretty much a tie.

In shock I said,"Bush got his ass handed to him in a basket!"

She hung up, and hasn't called since.
