What's so great about Kerry? |
|
Well other than the fact that he's been a champion for the causes of the people for his entire life!
Post your positive Kerry tales here please! I'd like to see what everyone likes about the next Pres!

1. I met him a few times working within the Mass. Congressional Delegation. |
|
Extremely friendly guy. Never tries to be over your head or "aloof" as the asshole media tries to portray. Loves to swear privately, which is actually a quality I admire because it shows me he doesn't feel like he has to prove anything to any one and that he is comfortable with himself.

2. He's made me re-evaluate my religion. |
|
Because he's an example of Catholicism as I knew it, growing up. He has been a true servant of the people. And In my mind, represents that old-style gentlemanly politics where people took their job as servant of the people, seriously.

He's been in a combat zone and understands in his gut that you only send troops into harm's way when there's a damn good reason.

I think the great thing about Kerry is the fact that he is willing and able to change his mind when presented with new evidence. Bush's "unwavering, tough stance on terror" is a line of unfounded, sanity-deficient lies. If I received a message that a road was closed on a drive home from work, I would take another route if it was on my way. Bush can't seem to make that connection. Bush would destroy the world (literally) if it would win him the war on terror (it would by default).
I like John Edwards because he stuck it to Cheney about his lesbian daughter. That bit in the debate had me on the floor laughing.

I know this might sound trite, but one of the things I like about Kerry is that he always seems to be a good sport. Like in the debates, he was carving Shrub up while keeping a smile on his face; and has the good graces to say nice things about Bush's family, even though they keep maliciously attacking his.
But my favorite Kerry story is this:
Back in 96, Kerry was in a very tight and somewhat mean-spirited race with Gov. Bill "Pothole" Weld. It was dubbed the "Battle of the Brahmins," since they are both old-wealth New England types. Anyways, despite the heated rhetoric of the campaign, the two agreed that, no matter who won, they would get together after the election for a beer, and toast each other's efforts.
Kerry, as we all know, came back from a 5-6 pt. deficit in the final weeks to win the race, thus cementing his reputation as a "closer." But after the smoke had cleared, he met with Weld at a pub in the North End called McGann's* and each bought each other a Guinness.
Again I know this sounds trite, but I like to see a politician who knows how to be a gentleman and a good sport, rather than just pursuing a scorched-earth path to victory. It's one of those character things that makes Bush look so tawdry in comparison.
*NOTE: I'm not sure if McGann's is still around, but they used to have great sheperd's pie!

9. Heard on PBS last night from Teresa -- |
|
A man who marries and can handle a strong woman is a strong man.
My estimation of Kerry went up several degress when I finally saw and started learning about Teresa. There must be something to him if a woman like her would marry him.

10. He stands up for what he believes |
|
He's been a hero of mine since his anti-war activism. He was courageous and stood up to the bullying of the Nixon administration. When he joined the Senate, he didn't take the normal path of pushing bills that got much attention, instead he conducted investigations into the corrupt and powerful. He's a man who is willing to seek the truth and fight the corrupt. He's a man of principals.

He explained why stem cell research is so important when a girl in iowa thanked him for supporting it. Kerry explains " you see her pancreas isn't producing enough insulin" etc etc etc. I would like to hear bush pronounce pancreas. W has two major organs that are shot, his liver and his brain!

14. He has done many great, difficult things with no political payoff |
|
Such as tackling the MIA issue and working to normalize US relations with Vietnam. Such as going after the Contras and BCCI. I don't understand why he has not made more of these efforts during his campaign, but they all show great personal courage - physical as well as moral - and a willingness to be serious about public life rather than a publicity-hog or a grandstander.
It is obvious that he has the capacity to study difficult issues in order to fully understand them, that he is vitally interested in learning all he can about what he has to do. He doesn't back down in the face of adversity or opposition, he is strong enough to take a punch without running away, he doesn't need to lie to himself or to anyone else.
What more do you need?

He may not look it, but he's known as the Barry White of the Legislative Branch of American government. Except that he's white, not fat, and not dead. But let's just say he knows how to work the body politic...
