Students threaten with expulsion if wearing pro-kerry at a high school

Free speech, Bush style

An email from Wisconsin.

A friend with a child in the Richland County,WI high school where George Bush appears today reports the following. Students were told they could not wear any pro-Kerry clothing or buttons or protest in any manner, at the risk of expulsion. After a parent inquired, an alternative activity will be provided, probably a movie being shown in an auditorium. (The school secretary reportedly said that students had the choice of just staying home if they didn't want to attend the Bush rally, but the principal subsequently offered an alternative.)

3. Maybe this is a good thing
Let the boy king think he's running unopposed. It will make it that much sweeter when his ass gets severely kicked next Tuesday.

If I were a mom at that school I would pitch a fucking fit.

5. Sock it to them...
Here's my email to Richland County and a link for anyone else who would like to give them an eye full.

Freedom's on the March and it’s marching right past Richland County. Is it true that you are not allowing your students to express their free speech during the President’s visit? Who the hell is teaching democratic values up there?

Since it fits into the four paragraph limit.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO JAIL FOR JUSTICE?

© 1998 Anne Feeney (BMI)

Was it Cesar Chavez? Maybe it was Dorothy Day
Some will say Dr. King or Gandhi set them on their way
No matter who your mentors are it's pretty plain to see
That, if you've been to jail for justice, you're in good company

Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand
Cause sitting in and lyin' down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom? or marched that picket line?
Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine

You law abiding citizens, come listen to this song
'Cause laws were made by people, and people can be wrong
Once unions were against the law, but slavery was fine
Women were denied the vote and children worked the mine
The more you study history the less you can deny it
A rotten law stays on the books til folks with guts defy it

The law's supposed to serve us, and so are the police
And when the system fails, it's up to us to speak our peace
We must be ever vigilant for justice to prevail
So get courage from your convictions
Let them haul you off to jail!

11. My school is Kerry buttons all over the place.
Though my school is probably majority Republican, all the Democrats I know - people who are normally apolitical - have Kerry Edwards buttons on their bookbag. It's practically a fad.

12. This has GOT to be illegal.
Are they allowing pro-Bush crap and suppressing anti-Bush crap? If so, then it's a blatant abuse of the students free-speech rights.

It's fucking ridiculous. It's a publicly funded school. How can Bush demand that he be allowed to hold a partisan political event during school hours and prohibit anyone who disagrees from participating?

opposing viewpoints of high school students. Absolutely amazing.

14. I remember when Clinton presented diplomas to a graduating....
high school class in Illinois, after the impeachment shit did not end like repukes wanted. Some of the little toads refused to shake his hand. I bet those little pukes would give a seig Heil for the chimp. Democracy can be soooo messy, if all are allowed to participate. The chimp fears freedom of speech more than most.
