Sister in Law says she is on the fence
She claims that historically they never voted out a president during a war!!! She is history major and thinks she is the cat's meow in term of intellect. I strongly reminded her of what the next forty years will be for her daughters if God forbid George Bush takes over.

I am peeved and insulted by her stupid claim of history. HELP!!!

1. Why the next 40 yrs?
Is there any significant reasons for 40 yrs instead of 20yrs or 60 yrs?

14. I didn't know if you were
maybe talking about the possible Supreme court appointees or something else I may be missing. Or if you just meant to put 4 more years. Thanks.

27. I've been worrying about
the exact same thing. I just couldn't imagine the possibilities of who could be appointed or what could happen if the wrong person is appointed.

She'd better get off the fence or forever hold her... knees together.

(If she's post-menopause, there are other questions to ask her.)

19. 'Wars' require armies.
'Wars' have POW's, not 'enemy combatants'.

As someone else pointed out, LBJ would have gone down to a resounding defeat if he'd run again, which is why he deferred. His VP, Humphrey, was soundly defeated, even though his election would have ensured a high degree of continuity in the Executive branch.

8. This is not a real war, it is an undeclared war
it is a war in terms that the "cold war" was a war and Ford was not elected during the cold war and Carter was also defeated during the cold war. LBJ refused to run becuz he knew he probably couldn't win.
This is not a war in the way WWII or WWI were declared wars or even the Spanish American War.

25. LOL, She lives in the Bay Area and thinks the San Franc. Chronicle is
badly written because it is left of left. Mind you, she claims the San Diego paper is well written. I have not a clue what she is talking about because I don't read those publications on regular basis.

However, I answered Good we need more balance in the media. It is tilting too much to the right. that made her eyes come out of their sockets.

13. Humorous approach?

Or.. Try the humorous approach, As I'd explain to my girlfriends who were on the fence: 'you know those women who stay with a guy no matter what? the ones that know he's messing up, know he's bad for her kids, bad for her bank account, and yet she stays with him? The ones that annoy the hell out of us? You're being one of them. Sometimes you just gotta break up with the man. It's time to break up with George Bush. He's trouble.

20. Your SOL is correct in her historical assumption,
that a sitting President has never been ousted during a time of war. You might remind her, however, that no previous President has taken this country to war preemptively and illegitimately and then fucked it up completely.

24. Harry Truman and LBJ both decided not to run
With all due respect, your sister is an idiot. The fact that no president has been voted out of office is somewhat dubious, given that Truman and LBJ both came to the conclusion that they could lose if they sought reelection. Moreover, why the HELL should she base her CURRENT voting decisions on what PAST generations have done? It seems to be that she is using her somewhat dubious interpretation of history in order to cloak her own laziness.

She is a sell out. I told her to come out and admit she is a conservative. You should hear her talk about affirmative action and the white students. I mean the woman reeks with racism. Oh, and she says, they don't hire whites for middle eastern studies!!! Can I hit my head against the pillow.

31. This War was caused by a Pres to call himself a War President
I don't think the Iraq War qualifies as a "can't defeat a wartime president" nonsense. We all know Bush started this was for other reasons than defense of our country.

If you want to call the War on Terror the war we are fighting then I guess Bush would have to pres. for ever as terrorists will always be here.

He started a war. No evidence to justify the war. No exit plan. No post-war plan. No way to pay for it. And he pissed of nearly the entire world in the process. He deserves to get fired.

Run through some of the obvious ones, but.. look, you said she's in the Bay Area- California is voting for Kerry. Presuming she's not voting absentee in Ohio of Florida, her vote, while important, is nothing like a deal-breaker. And it's my experience that some of these last minute "Ummmm... I Just can't make up my mind" or "I'm still leanin' towards Bush" people are just trying to get attention. I'm sorry, but the fucking information is there for everyone to see. Fiscal Responsibility? Running the gummint like a business? How about The largest deficit in US History. Or Look at the stock market, in the shitter. Keeping us safe? Competent foreign policy? Try a War based on false pretenses that is deteriorating on a daily basis. Massive amounts of explosives missing from Iraq, not because of an honest screw up, but because someone "didn't bother" (again!) to adequately plan.. Hell, they didn't even pretend to plan for this thing... Meanwhile the whole world hates us and Bush's dunderheaded policies have been the best recruiting ad Al Qaeda ever could have wished for. I'm not even going to get into areas like the environment or how this government is turning social and legal policies over to a bunch of religious right 1500s throwback fanatics.

The incompetence of this administration is so widespread, so obvious, so dangerous, and so CRIMINAL, that anyone who can't see it one week out from the most important election of our lives, well, I hate to say it, but they may be a lost cause. If she was in a swing state, I would say bust your chops trying to convince her otherwise, but we're going to cream Dubya here in the bay area. I say, if it comes down to beating your head against the wall with her or doing canvassing somewhere like Nevada, just let her cast her little protest vote and grind her axe.. There's bigger fish to fry.
