I don't know what the media filtration time is considered to be, but I think that the 2000 DUI flap is a pretty good example of a surprise unveiled a little too late.

However, I do notice a phenomenon. It looks like every investigative reporter in the U.S. had a deadline within the past two weeks; hence the avalanche of bad news for Bush. Reporters being what they are (I know a couple), we can expect a high volume of stragglers throughout the week.

The "October Surprise," such as it is, may be the press of a truckload of feathers, as every lightweight news outlet unleashes its one or two independent stories, all of which add up to what we here already know: that this is the most criminally incompetent administration in modern times.

Whatever Karl has left up his straightjacket-long sleeves may be muffled by a feather-bed's worth of bad news.

Or, the press could continue to be the amoral lapdogs they have generally proven themselves to be in the past four years.

The strategy is was simple minded, use the rw congress to box Kerry in to votes that he would regret later, use 9/11 and Iraq as the showpiece, use Kerry's opposition to the Vietnam War against him. And in the end if all that fails, paint him as a tax and spend liberal.
In essence this is all they have done and it's all they can do. Anything else would have been exposed through leaks long ago.
