Question for people who live in Republican areas
What is your sense of this election? Do you think Republicans are more motivated for Bush this time around? Do you see more (or less) Democratic support in your neighborhood than you have in the past? Do you think the election has harmfully polarized your community?

1. I live in GOP land. I am very happy with all the Kerry yard signs
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 04:16 PM by SpikeTrees
I think the GOP is torn on Bush, and I hope it carries some representatives to Congress and the General Assembly. As for polarization--I would say people are polarized.

edit:by "GOP land", I mean the suburbs I drive through. Cleveland is Democrat country.

2. I live in Lakeland Florida
There's a reason why Bush was here Saturday - this is a very red county (he won it in 2000.)

I have been fairly bummed out by the Kerry:Bush ratio of yard signs, but let me tell you what I've seen in the last few days.

Right after Bush was here, several new Bush/Cheney signs went up. Even our sweet neighbors put one up in their yard. These are the same people that helped us cut our trees after one of the hurricanes, and never once mentioned our Kerry sign. Sunday and Monday there were signs EVERYWHERE. It was aggravating. Then a weird thing happened... Monday morning I noticed a lot of the Bush signs were gone. By today, the Kerry:Bush ratio is almost 1:1. I see Kerry stuff everywhere... and Bush stuff disappearing.

I really think it would take an act of God for Kerry to win Lakeland, but then again, it would be just like God to put Bush in his place for abusing His Holy Name.

79. I know two very sweet rightwing geezers
...who live there. I called just before the last hurricane to make sure they were OK, had enough food and supplies, and so forth, and they told me THEY WERE VOTING FOR KERRY. I was stunned--these are Bible thumping, very conservative folk. The make-or-break issue: MEDICAL CARE. Both have chronic conditions and the savings are gone.

3. There has been a dramatic upsurge in
the amount of K/E signs in my upscale repug burb! It has been lovely to watch. In fact, there's this two million dollar home (here in Ohio that is quite a dwelling) owned by a surgeon and last week he put up three K/E signs. Kewl.

48. Newt's old district, in Atlanta: almost no yard signs for anyone
although I have seen about two-dozen total for bush, none for Kerry, and the ratio of W to KE bumperstickers is about 3-1.

Overall, I'd say less pro-bush than 2000, but also, few yard signs.

4. I live in a huge Republican Area in Ohio
When Clinton won, the feel on the street was like he'd done it in a coup. They are active, but in the recent republican chest-pounding, self-righteous, holier-than-thou, aghast that someone would have the audacity to disagree. On the other hand, the story in our county is that 6000 new Dems registered in this election. Typically in a presidential election year it's about 600.

We're visible and active unlike anything I've seen. We're on the front lines and I would frankly have expected better out of the republicans in our community. If we keep working we'll be all over them like ugly on an ape.

6. I think the Republicans are partly highly mobilized, partly disillusioned.
Plenty of Republicans in the religious wing of the party are highly motivated to get to the polls, and this could hurt us because the party can mobilize through the churches. But there are a lot of old-school conservatives who can't bring themselves to vote for Bush because he's not a conservative, he's just a bumbling idiot. So it's a split.

there are at least as many or more Kerry signs as Shrub, and way more Kerry bumper stickers. In 2000, there were virtually no Gore yard signs and lots of Shrub ones. Also, you cannot even park at the Dem. headquarters, which is just up the street (a few blocks) from the repuke one, and there is plenty of parking down there ;-). I think the Dems, at least in my town, are WAY more motivated than the repukes. I've never seen anything like it!

11. Teton Country, WY may go for Kerry
There's little hope of carrying the state (all 3 EV's), but it looks like we may carry the northwest corner up here. The local barber shop has a poll that's been very accurate over the years. It has Teton County going for Kerry/Edwards and Ladd over Cubin for the House seat. I know lots of local R's who are crossing over this election. Teton County went for Clinton but not for Gore.

12. I live in a liberal area of a very republican state.
Still, they let a few Bush/Cheny supporters in my neighborhood! 4 years ago, I noticed more Repub. signs than I had in the past - really only a handful - 2 or 3 in a 2 mile radius.

But this year - well, yea 2 or 3 Bush/Cheny signs, but TONS of Kerry/Edwards signs. In fact, this one guy has a Bush/Cheny sign that he appears to be hiding at night. I've noticed it when I'm walking my dog. The other day, I noticed his neighbor backing out of her driveway with a Kerry/Edwards sticker on her car. I quickly looked for her husband's car and he had one, too! Whenever a Bush/Cheny sign appears, at least 2 new Kerry/Edwards signs pop up!

Another one I noticed - house with a Bush/Cheny sign in the yard and a Kerry/Edwards sign in the window!

About 3 miles from Grandpa Bush. Usually 85% red, but the Kerry forces are active and visible (and I get a lot of love with my "Republicans for Kerry" and "Bubbas Against W" stickers on my greta big hunting truck), although we do have to put our yardsign in our house every night.

Senate, school board, state legislature, etc. but very few bushturd signs

in this particular gop nest.

But at my daughters' schools, the kids are all outspoken and I'd guess they represent the families' views overall and bush has a (very surprising to me) pretty big lead among what I once thought were pretty intelligent kids.

Lots of signs for local state reps and senators, not many for Bush. Unfortunately, the other half of my duplex has one.

I've talked to some reasonable 'pubbies that I know. They say they'll vote for Bush, but aren't happy about it at all. I put in a good, but subtle word for Kerry.

Who knows? Maybe they'll just refuse to vote for any candidate on the Presidential line on Nov. 2.

I don't expect ballot problems around here--we use optical scan, which in my mind is pretty reliable.

83. Yeah, who knew!
That was a tough run for him--it wasn't like he was running against a bloody fanged bastard. Weld had charm, charisma, a wonderful way with words, AND he had the advantage of being IN STATE 24/7, on TV all the time, and he worked the western part of the state like a son of a bitch.

I figured the debate would put JFK just over the top in that run, but I didn't expect him to win it in a walk.

Poor ole Weld. Lost the race, dumped his wife for a younger model, and moved to New York City! Screw those family values, I'm gonna PARTY!

I would not object at all if Dubya does the same, though I would offer my deepest sympathies to the people of New York, while at the same time offering my congratulations to Laura at losing all of that dead weight!

17. I'm in Macon, Georgia
Largely Republican for a number of reasons...One is that there's a very large concentration of wealth in the hands of a small group of white folks. Where there's wealth, there are generally republicans.
Another reason is religion. Many poorly informed people will actually vote for Monkey because they think he's a good Christian. If only they knew.

I'm pretty sure my state's to be written off for Bush, but today I got a nice surprise...among all the Bush & Calder Clay signs, I saw 3 different vehicles with Kerry/Edwards stickers. Seems people are just now getting excited...since usually I only see one every couple of days.

I truly think that a lot of Dems in this area are scared to stand up for themselves...vandalism, etc. I know one guy at work who refused to register to vote because he didn't want to be "in the system." I informed him that he was already "in the system" if he had a driver's license, but it was too late to register him by then. :(

Anyway, I'm optimistic about the race as a whole -- even if Georgia looks like a lost cause.

41. Disappearing yard sign
Well, as I was typing that message someone decided to come into my yard and steal my Kerry/Edwards sign. Pheh. Luckily, I've got another one handy. Anyone have ideas to get the better of someone who wants to suppress my 1st Amendment rights?

The wife and I were thinking of attaching one of those REALLY loud little magnetic alarms to it...and maybe using some hairspray to stick a lot of that powdered pepper spray (used to keep animals away) on the post. My main concern is that I don't want to do anything that's an invitation to steal my sign. I want my solution to be somewhat discreet, if you know what I mean.

are replacing stolen Kerry signs with signs that say "Republicans stole my sign" or "Republicans for a Fascist Government stole our Kerry sign" or one lady wrote "Are you afraid Bush will lose? Leave our Kerry signs alone"! It seems pretty effective because our theft rate is way down than it was a month ago.

I have had more than a couple tell me that it's unamerican to vote for the challenger when we are at war - in fact I have had two say the elections should be cancelled. These people around here have money but no education. I am constantly amazed at the level of ignorance around here. Also this is a VERY Baptist area, and most of the people I know who are republicans really believe you can't be a Christian and a Democrat unless you're black. Not joking.

Bush-bots (that's most people here, but we have of course quite a few loud opinionated blowhards) are not nearly so vocal as usual, and haven't been for a few months. My read is fear.

Because most of these people restrict their "news" and media consumption to FOX and hate radio, they mostly still probably think their king will "win" again, but even with the RW filter, they can sense they have a problem and might lose.

None of us who live in RW areas and see the results can doubt the importance of constant RW propaganda being pumped over the airwaves, and the adoring sheep restricting their "information" exposure to this propaganda.

But only right-wing religious types. 99% of all the Bush stickers I see are right next to an anti-abortion sign or a Christian fish.

This area gave * his biggest margin in the state in 2000. He still has lots of support, and the B/C signs predominate.

BUT I am seeing more and more K/E signs as time goes on. I stopped in at the local Dem headquarters today, and the folks there are unbelievably busy fielding calls from people wanting to volunteer and handling requests for lawn signs. They've even run out of K/E buttons!

This is all incredible to me - and incredibly wonderful!

36. Good questions, all
I'll take 'em one at a time.

>>What is your sense of this election?>>

It will be tight in this precinct, which is in a relatively well-off suburb of Montgomery County, Ohio. This suburb, though, has an unusual mix of all classes -- upper, middle, and lower. Where I live I would describe as middle to upper middle class. The precinct is pretty much 50/50 for Bush/Kerry, with perhaps slightly more leaning toward Kerry. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

>>Do you think Republicans are more motivated for Bush this time around? Do you see more (or less) Democratic support in your neighborhood than you have in the past?>>

EVERYBODY seems more motivated this year. The Democratic support has been surprising and gratifying since this is an historically GOP stronghold.

>>Do you think the election has harmfully polarized your community?>>

No. My neighborhood is a pretty laid-back area. I cannot speak, though, for others in this suburb.

38. I live in an area of FL that was Southern Democrat
when we moved here 12 years ago and is now about 55-45 Rep-Dem. Most of the elected officials in the county are republican and the democratic party has been in disarray here (which is why I've never joined it) until lately.

This is a combined retirement area with transplanted northerners, a place where younger northern teachers, nurses and doctors have relocated because of a pretty good quality of life and a fundie haven. It's been getting more evangelical over the past several years.

I expect the county to go Bush, but I've been seeing many more K/E yard signs and bumper stickers than I expected to see.

Lots of B/C stuff, of course, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the K/E signage.

At first, I was nervous about putting my Kerry sticker on my van (the first bumper sticker I have ever displayed!). But I have had no problems.

The most amazing thing to me is that our local daily endorsed Kerry on Sunday! It is very pro-business and features mostly right-wing syndicated columnists, but isn't a full-fledged conservative paper. Still, I was amazed they had the guts to endorse Kerry.

I imagine the fundies in the area have spontaneously combusted.

along the I-4 corridor. I see Bush signs and bumper stickers out number Kerry's at least five to one. Even at the university where I teach I see more Bush stickers.

42. Judging Bunnypants Support In Illinois
First, we're working our butts off...we've got a house seat for the taking and it's looking good, but nothing's being taken for granted and GOOP money is flowing big time here to save Phil Crane. But it's gonna be too little too late.

Driving through "the hood"...Northwest of Chicago (where Raygun took 65% of the vote in the 80's), there's a strong showing of Kerry/Edwards and polls show Kerry taking some of the heavily Repugnican collar counties (including DuPage) that could mean Kerry takes 60% or more of the vote statewide. Of course Obama is kicking ass as well.

We're gauging the Repugnicans by the signs they have on their lawn. It took them a while to get mobilized and we stopped the local GOOP patronage goons from planting their signs on public property...so it's a battle of yard signs and very amusing. We're grading them accordingly:

Bunnypants/Crashcart only - Die-hards, Rushbo fans, scared, religious, Faux News watchers (50% of the yards)

Bunnypants/Crane only - Rich die-hards, chickenhawks, profiteers & getting corporate welfare (33%)

Bunnypants/Crane/Keyes - Kool Aid Drinkers. Beware. Be afraid, very afraid. People with that "stare" at all times and firmly convinced in their own ignorance. (the rest).

Cheers!

43. Upstate New York
I live in a very Republican county, but in a liberal city within it. There are few BC signs, many KE signs and much Republican dissension as far as I can tell.

I have been lurking for a few weeks, and this is my first post.

46. In my very republican part of the state the motivation is all with the
Democratic party. We may not win here but it will not be for lack of hard work and enthusiasm. We have 20 phone lines working 12 hours a day at our phone bank. I have never seen anything like it. In the past we might have had 3 or phone lines and there would be several people who would do a little calling if they had time. If what is happening here is going on in the rest of the state then Missouri will be blue on Nov. 2nd.

65. Polls are underestimating Missouri
I'm in rural swing territory that is not recognized as such.
The NCLB\Property tax issue is screwing rural residents horribly.
The got nothing out of this tax break. There's still a culture barrier Bush is able to cross but Kerry can't when he gives a speech. There is a way to do it, though.
The door to door efforts in my area are huge. We may have the odd circumstance of Kerry riding Claire McCaskill's coattails. Feeling like they get personal attention from the campaign is the key.

Another issue I expect people are taking advantage of.
People who voted Straight Republican in 2000 were sold out by all of the Republicans on state level during the last session.
Both in the cities and in rural areas.
There are people in the cities who voted against the conceal\carry law themselves and had an urban Republican state rep who voted for it in their name. There are actual numbers on how people voted on that ballot measure. A lot of Republican voted against their districts.
There should be a backlash against Bush for that too.

Now there's K/E signs all over the place. I think the B/C to K/E ratio is about 1:1, with maybe slightly more B/C signs. I live in northwest NM, which is major Bush country except for the Navajo Reservation. It's encouraging.

50. OK, I guess Orange County needs to be represented here
You all know about it, but things are changing here:

We had a Kerry rally Oct. 9th. Only about 100 people showed but it wasn't advertised and 100 was OK since it was the first rally done here in my memory.

Our car has not been 'keyed'

Our house has not been egged. This is the big news. Two neighbors got egged in 1996. This is the first time since then that all of us have had the nerve to try it again. So far, so good.

More K/E stickers on cars then 1992 and 1996 combined for Clinton.

All in all, I have to say a fog has lifted over us. I feels wonderful!

51. I live where old Republicans go to die!
I'm in SoCal. Three miles from the Betty Ford Center, The Annenberg Ranch and the Eisenhower Hospital. Nothing here but golf courses, caregivers(like myself), Hispanics and Republicans with lots of money. My congressperson is Mary Bono, Sonny Bono's widow who took over when he died and keeps getting re-elected. The local paper endorsed * last Sunday and if weren't for DU, I would never believe my guy Kerry had a snowball's chance in California. My area is actually worse than Orange County.
So thank you DU for helping me maintain my sanity and I know we are going to win. PS. electronic voting here so I voted absentee.

52. These are great posts
I'm sure I speak for other people who live in solid blue states (like Massachusetts) and are struggling to get a sense of how the election is going nationwide. From the posts in this thread, it really sounds like progressive people have built a movement that bodes well for this election and, equally important, bodes well for future elections. May hat's off to those of you who are making inroads for progressives in conservative and Republican areas.

53. In heavily re-puke area near Sacramento...
I'm in El Dorado Hills, a very conservative area right next to Folsom lake near Sacramento.

A couple weeks ago, the one of the local weekly newspapers ran its 'Question of the week' feature, where they ask a question of 5 local people somewhere in town. The question: "Who do you support for President?" 4 out of 5 supported Shrubbie. The 5th one basically said they both sucked.

On the other hand: on my daily drive through the neighborhood, there are 5 Kerry/Edwards signs (including mine) and only 1 */Vader sign. And my Kerry sign, which is right next to the road, and out of sight of my house, has not been touched.

Overall, I feel we're gonna kick ass this year! :bounce:

Much pro-Kerry activity in Travis Co. (Austin) Imagine that.

My mother lives in SE Houston (land of the mouth breathers, think Gilley's/Urban Cowboy if you are that old) and doesn't report much Kerry activity. No surprise there.

But she is in the newly added DeLay area and says he looks to be much disliked in her neighborhood.

in Republican central (Johnson County, Kansas -- KS Suburb of Kansas City)

More K/E signs than Chimp/Snarl signs. Moderate thoughtful Republicans (yes there is such a thing) around here are at best luke warm about their Chimperor and some won't vote for him. But there are still plenty of fundies, ignorami and out-right fascists who still support him. Every dem I know is seething with anti-Bush feelings & K/E is getting support from previously dis-interested 20-somethings in my office (perhaps they feel a draft) so we'll GOTV big time (although I'm sure KS will stay red.)

70. In 2000
I saw bush signs everywhere and I saw not ONE Gore sign. Not one. I live in a suburb of Dallas.

This year, I see just a very very few bush signs. Only three in my entire neighborhood (about seven streets worth of houses).

But Kerry signs are everywhere (23 from those same seven streets).

Just from that alone, I'd say this year is very different.

repukes are still voting for bush, but they seem to be not too into advertising it publically.

Embarrassed?

75. A Red City in a Blue State
I live in San Diego, which although in a blue state is a very very conservative town.

I think bush's republican support is wavering, especially among those who would be considered McCain supporters.

However, his support among the "true believers" is strong and unwavering. I do honestly fear election night no matter which way this election goes, as each side has gained such a horrid hatred of the other.

Interesting little side note. Several years ago there was a guy who claimed to be a time traveller from the future. His name was John Titor and he claimed to be from the year 2037. He claimed that a civil war would start in America in early 2005 and mainly between the cities vs the rural areas and be based on political ideology.

I don't believe his story or that he travelled from the future; however, I do find his prediction interesting given the mood I currently see in this community.
