Bush doublespeak: Gay Civil Unions

[Not Me]

This morning, bush* said he "sees nothing wrong with civil unions...if that is what the states want to do".

HOWEVER, he has advanced the passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment which is worded thusly:

"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

"Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."

The 'legal incidence' phrase patently rules out the possibility of civil unions, and would invalidate existing Vermont unions. Bush knows this.
His base knows this. He is fooling no one.

2. I couldn't believe he was trying

to play off that he's for civil unions. I read about it in today's NYT..Kerry should call him on it.
