Holy crap, is anyone watching the Vermont Senate debate on CSPAN??? |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 07:54 PM by sgr2
Vermont is just bizarre. They've got Leahy, the Dem incumbent, and representatives of the Green, Marijuana, Liberty Union, Republican, and another guy whom I'm unsure where he's from.
Funny stuff.

4. The funniest part is.... |
|
The Marijuana candidate, a 45 year old hard nosed blond woman, came out in favor of the war. Something about no one in Iraq wanting to go back to Saddam.

I went from liking her to hating her in less than 60.
Even blurring the WOT w/ the invasion of Iraq.
Ack! I'm shocked anyone who smokes would be so willfully blind.
I guess I'm going to find the pot party's website to see their platform. (or plantform - lol).

8. A little bit; I'm looking forward to the live senate debate from Alaska |
|
That's at 11 PM Eastern. I've never seen a live debate from Alaska or Hawaii. We really need Knowles to knock off Murkowski.
I don't pay as much attention to the debates in lopsided races, like Vermont senate, unless I'm not familiar with the candidates.

11. Is that bow tie made of wood? |
|
The candidate for the Liberty Union party is wearing a bow tie made out of plywood. The Marijuana party candidate is showing more cleavage than any dancer on VH1. The other guy looks so petrified he can barely speak.
I love seeing democracy in action!

wishes like hell I could see that. C-Span is showing bush. But, yes Vermont politics are bizarre and lively and funny as hell. The repub is Jack McMullen, the carpetbagging freak. Don't you love his Groucho mustache? Actually he's been here about 7 years. Six years ago he ran to be the rupub nom for the Senate, but in a life imitates art moment, he was defeated by retired dairy farmer Fred Tuttle, whose campaign cost all of 21 dollars. Fred was immortalized, prior to running, in a very funny movie called "Man With a Plan". Bumper stickers read "Spread Fred".
After winning the Republican nomination, Fred promptly turned around and endorsed Pat Leahy. It was a very satisfying political season. We thought McMullen would slink off to the south never to darken our fair state again. Alas, he returned. He has been good for comic relief this dark political season. Pat made a sweet ad with kids about Champ the Lake Champlain creature, and McMullen accused him of deceiving children by encouraging them to believe in a mythical beast. He then accused Pat of having provoked Cheney into cursing him on the floor of the Senate. I could, honest, go on.
I guess Denny Laine is the Marijuana party candidate. He usually is for most races. And there's the grandmotherly lady, and libertarian guy.
Vermont has many other oddball politicians- and many great ones.

15. Who was the guy who "opposed" Leahy last time? |
|
Some 90 year old farmer who entered the Republican primary on a shoestring budget just to thwart the election efforts of a carpetbagging Repuke. After he won the Republican primary, he promptly endorsed Leahy.

do a little research and see what kind of job Vermont officials do for their constituents and their country in Washington. Leahy, Jeffords, Sanders....I`m proud of every single one of them. The rest of the country should be so lucky! These three have given voice to the voiceless for years and display enormous courage in their positions on issues.
In Vermont, we respectfully encourage a wide range of opinions. It`s good for us and good for democracy.

17. Perhaps saying it was bizarre was a bit harsh... |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 08:21 PM by sgr2
In comparison to where I'm originally from and live now (Ohio and then Florida) it seems bizarre to me. I don't feel it's bad, just odd.

They seem committed to good government and have lots of great political figures. I think its refreshing to see a true democratic discussion where we get a chance to hear from all sides of society. Way to go Vermont!
