DID IT: My Mother is NOT voting for Bush!! (& she is Southern Baptist~)
Write down your success stories!!!

I just got off the phone with my mom...I've been emailing her things for the last few years...she has always voted straight Republcian for as long as I've been alive...she had said in an email that she had questions about Bush, but couldn't vote for Kerry because he was diametrically opposed to everything she believes in...that got to me...cause she is a Christian, hello!!

She is southern Baptist...loves James Dobson and Hal Lindsey...Bible Codes and the Left Behind Series...that being said, she's a wonderful mother...

Today she called cause it was my birthday, and I figured she would let me yap on since she couldnt be mean today...

I went through it...what did she oppose from Kerry...why was she diametrically opposed to everything she believed in...

1. Gay Marriage...I gave her the deal on that, Bush and Kerry agree on it, they both say civil unions ok, gay marraige not...well, she didn't believe me, she says no, Kerry believes in gay marraige...I'm sending her that link now...

2. Abortion...my mom is very pro-life...but again, I said that abortions went UP under Bush because he doesn't give the sex education that is necessary...and that they went down under Clinton...

3. Health Care...she was being weird and asking, what about me, will it help me...I said, fine you can opt into it, but you probably got it better now, this can help about 27 million who have nothing, it will safe thousands of lives...finally she agreed...

4. Taxes...umm, she is really into that poor people dont deserve the money...but seriously, what will Jesus do...40% of poor people are children!! so tax their parents...progressive taxation is becaues of ECONOMIC reasons!! I need to work harder there...she ended that part by saying that I should give poor people my money...ummm, I'm a teacher...anyways, need more work there...

5. Kerry is a flip flopper...well, that was because Bush's spin was effective...so I'm ignoring that one...

But, I got her to agree with me on a lot...

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

She is not voting for Bush, she's voting for Nader (which is hysterical to me since he actually does believe in gay marriage...whatever...

But, she is in Florida, and isn't voting for Bush, that's the important thing, and she's voted Republclians since I was born...this is HUGE to me...I got her to NOT vote for Bush...

My other "accomplishments" (ALL in Florida!):
My friend and her husband who voted for Bush in 2000 are voting for Kerry...my other friend voted Nader in 2000, and is voting for Kerry...
My physical therapist (knee injury)has never voted before, I got him and his wife to register (actually brought in the forms)...he's voting Kerry, his wife doen't know anything he thinks she may like Bush, but I gave him the New Yorker article and said that his birthday present to me was to get his wife to read through it and talk about it...and he promised he would:)
I loaned out my copy of Outfoxed to the physical therapy people, and they said that about 15 of their clients have watched it...

Phew!!

6. you did great! its so funny how some bush people will instead vote nader
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 11:06 PM by faithnotgreed
i have a feeling!! they have no idea where nader stands on the issues so this is just funny to me

im glad for you and the whole situation. giving people information, talking it through.

i just found out my brother is a republican. hes at least open minded but was leaning bush. so when i just found this out the other day, ive tried to talk things out with him. so tonight we got to have an actual discussion about it, so i was glad for that. the facts are on our side and plus he said he doesnt think this war was a good idea...

anyway i made sure to send him to www.ontheissues.org which gives straight up information on all candidates and where they stand on the issues. its very good and covers all the topics
plus they have alink to take the president match quiz

he also laughingly brought up factcheck.com (per dick cheney) but he knew that was a pro kerry site
so i told him that yeah he could go to factcheck.org which would give some information

happy birthday!!! you gave us all a gift

7. So, my mother is a Southern Catholic
and she would never vote for the Shrub!

Oh... success stories... :) Sorry...

I got my 59-year-old step-Dad, who's NEVER voted in his life, registered and he voted for Kerry this year. And I'm not even a huge Kerry supporter! :)

I was BORN ABB. LOL!

9. One question I've been asking people who don't like Bush
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 11:22 PM by LittleClarkie
but don't know if they like Kerry, and give that damn flip/flopper reason, is

"If you don't like Bush, then why are you agreeing with what he's saying about Kerry? Isn't that like going to the Bears to ask about the Packers?" (insert team rivalry of your choice, or any appropriate comparison that will reach your person.")

I got an undecided in Green Bay to laugh about that. I don't know if I swayed her, because she was already in the middle of researching anyway. I let her get back to it.

Otherwise, I know a Nader person who's voting for Kerry. And a Bush person who is voting for Nader, because he's worried about what Bush will do without an election to keep him in line.

10. Hey Jab,
That's great! Does she know that Senator Edwards is a Southern Baptist too? ~ :)

I knew I heard him say that a few times, so I just looked it up --> http://www.beliefnet.com/story/148/story_14869_1.html

She should love his comments on that site!
