LOL - Dem Poll workers are accused of illegal finger pointing in Charlotte
Poll workers accused of favoritism
Updated: 10/27/2004 7:41 AM
By: Jason Bronis, News 14 Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The North Carolina Republican Party said it has received reports that some poll workers are trying to persuade Mecklenburg County voters to vote Democrat.

David Turner said it happened to him when he went to cast his early vote at the University City Library.

When a poll worker told him how to cast his vote, "she reached over and literally pointed her finger to the Kerry/Edwards ticket, Turner said Tuesday.

snip

She said that's how the machine works, and I was appalled for her to literally walk up and point to Kerry/Edwards, Turner said. It wasn't like she was vaguely pointing anywhere on the page. She pointed directly to Kerry and Edwards."

Here's a pic of the poor sap that was almost duped into voting for Kerry by the finger pointing poll worker

2. Along the same lines, the same paper
has a poll about the flu shot controversy in which 70% or so say we shouldn't be concerned about it.

Can you say "right wing rag"?

3. Take "News 14" with a big old grain of salt. Still, if it happened,
it's pretty tacky, and we should, no must, be better than that.

6. It sounds like she was just actually showing him and had to
point somewhere. if she pointed to the * ticket he wouldn't have complained. To cast votes people should be required to be literate enough to locate their desired candidate. If the pinting trick actually works, though, I'm standing on a street corner every day pointing to the Kerry spot. The highly gullible are in the bag now!

I guess they could have mock ballots with fictional names to show people how to vote properly, but I doubt it occured to them that it would be an issue.

7. Poor guy- Looks like cross between Mark Hyman and John O'Neill
I attended a training meeting this week for N.C. precinct assistants where they warned about not pointing directly or too closely towards the slate of candidates because there had been and could be complaints of pointing toward specific candidates. The fact we have separate Presidential vote not included in straight ticket is source of problem.

It's hard though to point out where the Presidential candidates are shown on the left side without appearing to point to Kerry because it is totally separate from all other races and Kerry/Edwards are the top names. But if the poll worker just says "You need to vote for the President on the lefthand side" that could be taken that you are endorsing Bush. Best thing is to use entire outstreached hand to direct their attention to the left side (not point with index figure) and tell voters they must vote separately for the candidates for President.
