ballot mystery in Florida
http://www.local10.com/politics/3854230/detail.html

Excuse me if this has already been posted. Threads move so quickly on GD 2004 that I can't keep up.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Local 10 has received many phone calls from viewers in Broward County who say they have not received the absentee ballots –- and the news from the elections office doesn't sound good.

Local 10 has learned that many as many as 58,000 ballots that were supposed to mailed out on Oct. 7 and 8 could be missing.

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections office is saying only that the situation is "unusual," and they are looking into it.

1. Well, where was the delivery chain broken?
Someone had to deliver a ;large mailing. If that didn't happen then the driver knows. If the consignment was received the postal clerks know. If somewhere else within the postal system 50,000 pieces were mislaid THAT would be pretty unlikely even in the usual postal mess.

There is probably a simple answer, but what i don't get is how they can't pinpoint the problem at the dock, because losing that much unworked mail for that long inside the system is really a stretch under the circumstances, especially when they go looking for it.

3. I just wonder if
it ever got to the post office, or maybe someone signed for it but didn't get it inside the building after. it is extremely risky for a postal employee to try anything remotely crooked like that. The courier who mails the letters though can say anything and get away with more with much lesser penalty.

4. MSNBC just reported
That they are being sent out again, and that people should call if they haven't received them by Friday.
