Hannity lamenting the absence of presidential killers/assassins
My coworker told me she was listening to Hannity while driving home yesterday, and he was going off about Kerry and on about "where are the likes of John Hinckley and Lee Harvey Oswald when you need them"??

She was so upset she sent an email to Fox and Hannity to voice her disqust.

Can you remotely, REMOTELY, imagine what the right would say if a Democrat went on the radio with similar musings??????

2. I hope someone informs the Secret Service and the FCC
It's illegal to threaten a candidate, even in jest.

17. Unfortunately I don't think that would qualify as a direct threat but.....
It's definately neck high in the grey area. Likely nothing more will happen to the little squid other than someone telling him to cool it with the death talk.

Asshole's world is about to crumble and fall in 5 days and 12 hours anyway. He should do a Martha and go to the beach, do some shopping, have his nails done and just enjoy these last few days.

he was talking about taking out AWOL, so that they would not have to admit God was wrong in 2000.

Cheers

7. If you or I were to say that...
Or much, much less, we would get a visit from and hauled in by The Secret Service. I suggest that your friend report what she heard to The Secret Service. Let them investigate it. That's their job.

8. he was discussing an op/ed from the Guardian
earlier in the week which made the idiotic statement. Hannity is using it like it's from the Kerry campaign, repeating it over and over like Democrats are behind this nonsense. :eyes:

10. I think your coworker might have misunderstood
I've never listened to Hannity, but I do know the Right's going nuts over an article in the Guardian where someone wrote, about Bush, "Where's JW Booth, LH Oswald, J Hinckley when you need them?" I would guess that he was bitching about that, not saying it about Kerry.

Believe me, Insannity would never say anything to give the Democrats any ammunition against him.

19. The law is mainly used to stifle free speech, because it states:
**********************************************
THREATS AGAINST PRESIDENT - 18 USC 871, makes it a Federal crime or offense for anyone to willfully make a true threat to injure or kill the President of the United States.

A person can be found guilty of that offense only if all of the following facts are proved beyond a reasonable doubt:

First: That the person uttered words alleged to be the threat against the President;

Second: That the person understood and meant the words he used as a true threat; and

Third: That the person uttered the words knowingly and willfully.

A "threat" is a statement expressing an intention to kill or injure the President; and a "true threat" means a serious threat as distinguished from words used as mere political argument, idle or careless talk, or something said in a joking manner.

The essence of the offense is the knowing and willful making of a true threat. So, if it is proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the person knowingly made a true threat against the President, willfully intending that it be understood by others as a serious threat, then the offense is complete; it is not necessary to prove that the person actually intended to carry out the threat.
****************************************************************

So, you can say you would like to see * dead, but it does not rise to the level of an actual threat unless it was meant as a TRUE threat.

Of course, those in power like to use the law as a club to say that anything remotely resembling a threat, or a sentence that contains at least three of the following words (President, kill, dead, want, to, and American) means the person should be locked up immediately.

Everyone over-reacts to this, IMO. The real danger can be understood by looking at U.S. history, and who actually gets assassinated. If they really want to protect the POTUS, I think a little profiling is in order. Dems don't kill politicians. Only pukes do.

24. Difference between ought to be and will be
<<First: That the person uttered words alleged to be the threat against the President;

I see what you mean. A lot of people seem make an even more fundamental misunderstanding than what is described above. As an example, 'the president deserves to die' is a normative statement, and does not necessarily imply action at all. 'I will kill the president' is a very specific statement of intent.

Not to defend the bastard, but that is the wording that the Guardian used, and I can imagine Hannity was going off on them.

22. If he really did say that
that is horrible.

I wouldn't wish that on anybody, even if they deserved it... not even the chimp.

I'm too young to remember this, but my mom said that as much as she hated Reagan, she was not at all happy when he was shot. Not a good thing for the country in any case.

sweet 'emotional' alternative.

Logic does not work with these people.

25. bush may be more valuable to them dead than alive.
think about it ...... less than a week before the election, it's obvious momentum is shifting kerry's way. though they've spent four years trying to fix this election, it's possible there will be enough vigilance to prevent that.

if kerry takes office, there's a very good chance cheney and others will be in trouble. best case scenario, the sugar teat drives up for cheney and his crew. worst case, he goes to prison for the rest of his life and the entire administration goes down in history as perhaps the most shameful ever.

on the other hand, if a mad, liberal assassin were to shoot bush, cheney can declare martial law. even better, if it were a turrist, the whole election could be shut down or "postponed."

cheney will guarantee himself a full term. free speech will be a thing of the past. freepers will be emboldened and a lot of violence will be directed toward anyone who has or does oppose that administration -- including the likes of us. sedition will become a prosecutable offense overnight.

bush, in his doofusness, is about to blow it for them. he's really must a glide-through-life, fratboy type who's beginning to suffer from the effects of alcohol dementia. he's always been in over his head, but his cognitive skills seem to be fading quickly.

if bush had his way, he'd probably be happy as a little clam to lose. go home to crawford, play video golf all day, coast on a nice pension, shake hands and have people still talk to you like you're important. life could be simple -- just like he is -- again.

cheney and his crew stand more to lose than anyone in this election. so if i were bush, i'd really, really watch my back over the next 5 days. less farfetched things have happened.
