Kerry pulling ahead
http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=909

Pollster John Zogby: "Today was a big day for Kerry, with a 5 point lead in the single day of polling. Kerry has managed to consolidate a big chunk of his base just as Bush has done on his own behalf. Kerry leads 2 to 1 among Hispanics; he is getting 90% of African Americans; 84% of Democrats; 55% of union voters; 65% of singles; and well over 50% of all voters earning under $50K.

So much for "wolf-boy" Bush.

8. Democrats in the Deep South
have never really been Democrats in terms of what that party affiliation means elsewhere in the country. I heard a trucker last night with a Southern drawl call Coast-to-Coast AM saying he had been leaning toward voting Kerry but the NRA had convinced him that Kerry was going to go door-to-door confiscating firearms.

Doesn't matter that it's not true. Southern Democrats, especially white males, are always looking for a justification to split their tickets.

12. Nonsense!
Don't lump us all together.
I am a proud Southern Democrat and I vote straight ticket, unless I personally know a candidate and don't like them, then I just leave it blank. I flat out refuse to vote for a Republican. I have more self-respect than to do that!

30. Wrong...
...don't lump us all together. Thats called Stereotyping. In fact, most Dems I know in the South who are "white males" are usually descendents of the old Southern Progressive branch of Democrats. In fact, political scientist would probably call them Newdealers. Many "white male" Democrats in the South are militantly Democrats in the since that we are surrounded by Republicans, and have learned to defend our party to the utmost. We know, we live in the belly of the beast. Most white males who are conservative in the South, have already gone over to the Republicans. The Dixiecrats left our party a long time ago.

The reason that some of the Democratic politicians in the South are Conservative Democrats is precisely because they are living in Republican states, and in order to get elected, they have to have a certain amount of "conservative" values. If they want to get elected, they have to give Republicans a reason to vote for them, since Republicans make up the majority in the states. This is not dissimilar to the Northeast Republicans, who have to appear somewhat moderate, because they live in states that are primarily Democrat.

As for a Zell Miller, he's just a nut by anyone's standards.

That's just insulting. We don't make snide comments about you guys.
I could, but I don't.

Why do this here?? You're not helping anything. If anything, people like you guys are pushing the last hangers-on that are iffy here out of the party.

21. Damn right, Ruby in GA
I'm another lifelong Democrat born and raised in South Georgia. I wouldn't vote Republican to save my fucking life. In fact, they sicken me. How dare people insinuate that Southern Democrats aren't real Democrats.

26. "Southern Democrat" < > Dixiecrat
The "true" blue Dixiecrats all fled the party between 1948--1968, when the Democrats as a national party got seriously behind civil rights and desegregation. They went with the likes of Strom Thurmon, John Connally and Phil Gramm, and we have not missed them since.

To say that all "Southern Democrats" today are "Dixiecrats" just ain't true. Most Southern Dems are working-class people who have always stood up against the moneyed, connected "elitist" Republicans from the Northeast-- the Rockefellers and the Bushs who always thought they knew what was best for them because of their social status. They've also maintained a healthy distrust of over-centralized power and control by people whom they don't know. Not bad qualities to have, IMHO.

The Dixiecrat is an extinct species today, thank Allah. Today's Southern Democrats have as much in common with them as Robert LaFollette has in common with the Republicans of today.

Dem/GOP. However the GOP DOMINATES the south, and for all the wrong reasons...and it's too bad the Dems can't take some of that back.

28. Thanks Ruby!
There are many of us Dems here in the south who are liberals and work our asses off for the party. Dixiecrats are a dying breed - they all switched to the Republicans back in the Reagan years (except Zell Miller).

24. Mighty big talk for a guy from a state
that is rapidly becoming a Republican stronghold and sends the likes of Norm Coleman to the Senate.

Here's a little bit of advice--next time you have nothing intelligent to add to a discussion, just don't say anything. It'll keep you from looking like such a fool.

31. Wrong again...
Check post #30 for explanation. BTW, what ever happpened to Minnesota being a Liberal state? Should we just "torch" the state of Minnesota in order to "kill the rats". Don't worry about us, you need to do some legwork up there yourself.

5. I read that
And thought it must be a misprint since the tracking poll still had Bush up by 1. But if it wasn't an error, then we should see a strong Kerry shift over the next two days in the 3-day rolling tracker.

14. Fantastic news on the 5% one-day lead! This will carry through for
two more days, and combined with the Iraq missing explosives story it could give Kerry a solid Zogby lead going into the weekend. Because of his past performance, Zogby is regarded as the best pollster. Kerry will be seen as the favorite on Tuesday, which will not only help in actual voting, but also in being seen as the rightful winner if the election is disputed.
