Poll: Kerry Gaining Among Swing Voters
Poll: Kerry Gaining Among Swing Voters

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) gained some ground on President Bush (news - web sites) among swing voters in the last month, with several citing the presidential debates as a factor in their shift, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press called back 519 voters who were either undecided in September or said they could still change their minds. That group tilted toward Bush in September and is now evenly split on Bush and Kerry.

By more than 3-to-1, the swing voters said Kerry did the better job in the debates.

Swing voters "have been drifting toward Kerry a little more than Bush," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center. "But everything about the remaining slice of the electorate says it's pretty much even."

1. Uh, Andrew, if you take even vs. even and add undecided to one of those,
doesn't that make it UNeven?

Isn't that the point that you and your media friends have been making for months--that the campaigns are interested in persuading those elusive undecideds?

We all know that getting out the decided vote is very important too.

This is my very first posting here. I love DU. I come here and read all the time so I finally decided to get an account. Just wanted to say that this is such great news for John Kerry. I am going to be biting my fingernails on election night. I hope JK wins.

7. As the percentage of swing voters becomes smaller
The profile of the remaining voters starts to resemble the historical trend more and more. The trend towards Kerry will go up from split, to in the final days, anywhere from 75 to 85 percent of them going for the opponent to the incumbent.
