5. It's absolute, naked cynicism. |
|
It's a crass, shameless appeal to emotion, which assumes that only the weak minded and those already taken in will respond to it. Disgustingly manipulative.

It would have been bad enough had it just been a mawkish sympathy thing.
But the narrative of the Ashley ad is that Ashley was in an unresolved state of trauma, until His Chimperial Majesty laid his hands upon her and healed her. The "family friend" in the ad says, "You could see at that very moment the light return to her eyes."
Here we go again with this stupid magical Christianity, this primitive sky-god worship, this stupid peasant superstitious bullshit about the divine right of kings and their powers of healing.

For whatever reason, that ad gets on my nerves like no smear ad does. The message is so "See, he cares--and he's really, really important, so he doesn't even *have* to." I just want to tell that child, baby, see...he put you in a campaign ad. He didn't cure you of all sorrow and woe for nothing! (She was...so withdrawn 'til the touch of the Most Important Man in The World snapped her out of it, you know.) And then, I guess it's her father or something who says "That day, I saw what I wanted to see in a..." world leader, or whatever. My ears cut off right about there. "I saw what I wanted to see." Yep. A lot of people do. It's a rap with a mallet right on my cynicism reflex point. (Yes, I believe her grief and hero worship are quite real. This is what makes it a zillion times ickier!)

To ride 3000 corpses to a second term.
It will not work. The tragedy on September the 11th does not belong to one person, one party or one people... it belongs to us all.
Bush is trying to portray himself as this father-figure you can't live without. Someone who is uniquely qualified to watch and protect this nation.
The ad is little on substance. I thank God she sleeps better at night and has stopped crying.
Unfortunately for Bush, he can't hug every voter before next Tuesday.
Screw a hug - I'd feel alot safer if he was securing our ports, if he was hunting down Al Qaeda with a greater intensity, if he was attempting to speak to the country's better side than trying to split the country apart so he can grab the two biggest pieces.

17. Yeah, the very existence of the ad which tries to show Bush's compassion |
|
actually proves that he has none whatsoever.
