Watch out freepers and religious right nuts! My burb is gettin' liberal!
Wow. For those of you who live in BIG liberal cities, what I am about to write will likely elicit nothing more than a shrug from you. But I live in a sleepy burb of Dallas, so it's a bigger deal.

The grocery store down the street has apparently booked a bunch of musicians to play in front of the store just on random nights, for no reason other than to have fun. They aren't selling hot dogs to profit the store or anything, nope. Just having some fun and listening to some music. What's even weirder are the acts they booked: Elvis and Tom Jones impersonators. When we went to the store tonight, Little Moonbeam and I found ourselves hanging out in the parking lot with a ton of other people shaking our booties and singing "A hunka hunka burnin' love!" I went in and asked the manager about it and that's how I found out so much. He hopes to line up more acts, too. The band takes tips. Found out the store manager is a Dem.

Next thing: a little independent coffee shop has opened up down the street. NOT a Starbucks, totally on its own. I went in the other day (been open a couple of weeks) and there were high school students picking guitars and writing, people kicking back and reading, other people playing chess and backgammon and little, rather racuous groups of adults sitting around laughing and talking VERY loudly.

Also: there's a diner downtown that has experienced a revival and has suddenly attracted a large crowd of Hispanics, union workers, and long-time residents, along with high school kids from the north end of town. What an interesting mix of people. It's basically a greasy spoon, but people have started giving impromptu political speeches while standing on chairs, and it's turned into quite the attraction. Like our weird version of Speaker's Corner (is that what it's called? In London?) and a few unions have decided to have meetings there. Our downtown was DEAD and it seems to be coming back to life because of this and a few other establishments.

Then: I was told today, anecdotally by teachers and parents that they are amazed at the number of ELEMENTARY school kids who didn't care to take and wear a red ribbon in support of "Hugs Not Drugs" week. EH? What gives? Apparently despite the best efforts of the right, our children still seem to somehow manage to have critical thinking skills. So many of them questioned why they should wear one that at one school the principal just said "Fine don't take one" and they said "ok!" What is this world coming to when elementary kids are thinking for themselves? My own daughter didn't take one. When I asked her why she said, "It seemed kind of dumb. Is a red ribbon supposed to keep me from doing drugs later?" Now I am not making a comment on the Red Ribbon program itself, but I thought their behavior very unusual.

Lastly, my city just voted to allow the sale of wine and beer. THAT alone is amazing. Soon, I will be able to go three blocks and get wine or beer. Ain't that the shit?

One of my Dem neighbors came out this afternoon and was talking to me at our common mailbox, then another one came out. Both of them were calling bush a murderer (these guys were pretty soft Dems just a year ago) and we happened to notice one of our republican neighbors looking out his front window. One of the Dems I was with yelled "HEY! ALL US DEMOCRATS ARE OUT HERE PLOTTING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD! BE AFRAID!" He didn't mean it as aggressively as it sounds, it was all taken well. But still. I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

I am convinced this is the result of the right pushing too hard. They are experiencing backlash, and it will keep coming.

To victory on Tuesday, DUers!

1. Which burb of Dallas?
If you go to Arlington, check out TANSTAAFL. I know the folks that own it, and they are Dems.

24. TANSTAAFL
means "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch". If you go, say hi to Mary Ann from the Sufi in Arkansas. I think she'll know who it is.

5. Along those lines, this sleepy little town in Colorado
is definitely blooming with Kerry Edwards signs. It makes my day, when I go for a run, and I am able to count 22 K/E signs and 3 * signs.

I was wearing my "Women for Kerry" dogtag and 3 people asked me where I got them. I've had "thumbs up" when I'm working in the yard and people see my K/E signs.

And, the other day when it was very windy, my Salazar blew into the yard of someone (who early on had a * sign but took it down) a ways down the road, and before I could get there, she'd stuck it in her yard. :-) Figured I'd get another one -- happy to see her put it up.

Here's to hoping Colorado goes Blue.

But I'm definitely pleased to hear about Texas. Visited there for business about three weeks ago (Plano area) and was surprised by the K/E bumperstickers I saw...

PS -- Moonbeam -- I think I know you from TPP? Just checkin. :-)

But yep, I know -- it's gotten pretty quiet over there without you guys, and I only check there occasionally. I've lurked at DU for months... don't know what I'd do without it.

9. I hope your small town revival is repeated across the US!
Imagine that! People talking to each other again and Reading! Polite political discourse revives and people prefer to patronize their local establishments over the big boxes (Costco exluded). Sounds like enlightenment to me. Maybe we needed 4 years of Bush to bring about "A New American Enlightenment"! I hope this fever comes quickly to my town! Maybe education and brains and smarts and DEBATE!!! will be valued under the Kerry administration!

10. Kick for importance
We have learned again through "meetups" how to talk to each other. Even if we lose this election, WHICH I DOUBT!!! we must remain as a force for change.

12. That's what that diner
reminds me of. It reminds me of the meetups I first started going to last summer for Dean.

The energy was amazing, contagious.

It's so cool to just see people get up on their chair and start giving a little speech about something or other. Some listen, some go on chatting with their table mates. There are cheers or boos, but no food throwing.

It sort of reminds me of British Parliament. You know, kinda rambunctious, but important.

14. Maybe we should start a similar format
to Question Time. We can debate each other in meetups and stay fresh for the next campaign. It'll keep us on our toes.

That is pay for your lunch. Robert Heinlein, a science fiction author, wrote a book by that name back in the sixties.

16. I'll add something else I noticed
more people are walking. I don't know if it's the high price of gas, or what, but I have seen more people walking places and I don't just mean early morning and late evening power walkers.

Also, my city did a cool thing several years back. Instead of just putting grass or some silly ornamental trees on the medians of the major thoroughfares, they planted pecan trees.

Now every fall, anyone who wants to can harvest pecans. They are planted on the median and on both sides of the road in a lot of places. This time of year you see all kinds of families out with plastic grocery sacks and long sticks to get the pecans.

I thought that was really cool of my city. A woman on city council insisted on it. She's a long-time resident and a bigwig, so she got her wish.

Too bad I don't. Sessions is starting to sound very desparate. I actually heard a "please don't split your vote between Bush and Frost" ad today.
