South Carolina: GOP registers 28,000 imaginary voters

http://www.scdp.org/blog.php

The South Carolina GOP claims they registered 40,000 new white voters in South Carolina.

Official records from the state show an increase of only 12,000 white voters.

So where did the other 28,000 voters come from?

1. Good Question wyethwire!
BTW, I've converted a couple of former bushies here in the upstate. They tell me that they really will do the right thing and vote for Kerry. Let's hope so.

3. May I remind DU that Lee Atwater was from SC...
(appropos of practically nothing: I had a political science class with his cousin).

SC, land of my birth, is notorious for dirty tricks politics. I remember in Clinton's first election there was a church in the upstate that was a used as a polling place ... the powers that be in the church refused to allow Democrats to vote.

4. they were blowing smoke
Remember some of the preposterous claims that came from their camp earlier this year? Something about the millions of volunteers they'd signed up for a grassroots door-to-door campaign. We all scoffed at the reports here.

It's their "aura of invincibility" strategy.

7. I believe them
It's entirely possible they increased the number of registered republicans by 40,000. Strategies like reregistering unknowing petition signers as republicans are remarkably effective for increasing the numbers.

9. So how does this help them?
Just exagerating their accomplishments? If the othe 28000 voters aren't really registered, they can't use them for any fraudulent purpose I can think of.
