OMFG! Bush campaign emails accidentally sent to Bush parody site
http://www.georgewbush.org/deadletteroffice/index.asp

Los Angeles Times
WASHINGTON -- For months, campaign staffers for President Bush and other Republican operatives have been sending internal memos and other documents, some of them sensitive, to the wrong e-mail address.
That is how the world learned this week of a so-called “caging” list consisting largely of black voters in Florida, who critics say were likely targets of GOP voter challenges.
The errant e-mails were sent to georgewbush.org instead of georgewbush.com. To Republicans’ dismay, www.georgewbush.org is a satirical site that pokes fun at the president -- and is displaying many of those e-mails.

< snip >

Posted on the Web site now, for public viewing, is material related to the campaign’s battleground state strategy, internal fretting over Democratic candidate John F. Kerry’s gains on the stem-cell issue, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s scripts for automated calls to Spanish-speaking voters encouraging early voting -- even discussion by a presumably young GOP admirer of presidential daughter Barbara Bush, who was advised by one correspondent to “stay away from (twin sister) Jenna or things could get ugly.”

26. Seems to refer to challenging voters
No one's posted the origins of the word - I don't think they plan to lock anyone up on election day. The lists are of people whose mail was returned as undeliverable at the address they registered from.

30. organized voter challenging
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 12:33 AM by progdonkey
The Republicans apparently intend to use the list to keep an eye out for Democrats at the polls, so they can challenge (read: intimidate) largely-minority Dem voters.

In effect, they will be "caging" them by challenging them at the polls, thereby requiring the people on the list to fill out a provisional ballot that may or may not get counted; the use of the word probably comes from the idea that the challenged voter is being boxed-in and forced to go through extra hurdles to vote, instead of being completely free to vote normally.

Also, challenging voters is very time consuming. Say it adds just an extra minute per challenged voter to the time people wait in line. If 30 of the people on the list are in front of you in the line, that's an extra 30 minutes you're just standing there--and that's with the conservative estimate of just one minute! If someone is spending his lunch break to vote, he doesn't exactly have all this extra time to stand in line, and many people will just give up and go back to work.

something needs to be done about this (below). can't we say something intelligent? can't Bush announce something progressive like dedicating even more federal funds to stem cells and other, more advanced areas such as cord blood? i am so tired of this nuttiness. (and when he says he was first prez to dedicate funds, the dem retort is that this research was not around several years ago, and amount is insignificant)

when healthcare is discussed next debate, things like stem cells and health care insurance and expensive drugs could bury him. i hope this is registering out there.

He will specialize in "strategic public affairs management" of health care and reimbursement issues regarding Medicare and Medicaid.

Mentioned it in his Washington post collumn, yesterday (just that it happened) and today (quick summary of the Pallast story).

Apparently Randi Rhodes mentioned it on air, and they just got paniced email from what sounded like a terrified freeper, saying the page slipped out (apparently not realizing that it was a parody site, run by lefties, who put it up intentionally). Should be amusing to see what happens when it hits the freep....

Hopefully they have had time to harden the page..

15. But encryption is a munition...
Less so than before, but there are still controls on "good" encryption. As a result, things like Outlook don't include it.

(basically if it is strong enough to take more than a day for NSA to brute force crack, its too good for the general public. This is an improvement over the old rules that kept exportable keys down to the under an hour on standard hardware crack time)

The intelligence community considers this a feature...

27. "Good" encryption? They didn't even ROT-13 it, ferchrissakes
This is not rocket science. Just freakin' download/compile a crypto engine from gnu.org and run your files through it before you send them to your buddies.

These guys don't appear to grok the obvious implications of the fact that once their precious packets leave the safety of their happy little firewalled LAN, they don't know who's sniffing their mail -- even when they send it to the right addresses. I'm beginning to think that spying on our government would be somewhat easier than it looks in movies...

33. Remember, we are talking about
Republican political operative Micro$oft customers. If it isn't included in the "for dummies" book, they don't know its possible to do.

These are people I could never convince to do one of my mini junkyard wars team building programs, as while they are good customers for things like rock wall sessions, they are tool phobic, and the idea of having to solve a (GAK) mechanical problem, then actually build it, without step-by-step instructions for the handyman to follow.... Tiny plug Rubbish Deconstruction League, after all I don't have a star, as I am a victim of the "booming" Bush hi-tech economy.

Hopefully we have actual professionals handling network security for the white house. But having helped at a number of them (admittedly a biased viewpoint, as they were always democratic) I am convinced "campaign organization" ranks up with "management science" and "millitary intelligence" in the oxymoron department, so I wouldn't be surprised about what we would collect if we simply parked outside the building, wireless ethernet enabled... National HQ is likely secure, but one of the regional offices...

Why would that have to be confidential? Also, on the same attachment, note the media invites.

10.26.2004: Readers may be interested to learn that the "caging" e-mails below (one and two) are indeed the same documents referenced in Greg Palast's latest BBC Newsnight investigation. We sent them to him last week prior to assembling this page.

New Florida vote scandal feared

By Greg Palast
Reporting for Newsnight

A secret document obtained from inside Bush campaign headquarters in Florida suggests a plan - possibly in violation of US law - to disrupt voting in the state's African-American voting districts, a BBC Newsnight investigation reveals.

Two e-mails, prepared for the executive director of the Bush campaign in Florida and the campaign's national research director in Washington DC, contain a 15-page so-called "caging list".

It lists 1,886 names and addresses of voters in predominantly black and traditionally Democrat areas of Jacksonville, Florida.

An elections supervisor in Tallahassee, when shown the list, told Newsnight: "The only possible reason why they would keep such a thing is to challenge voters on election day."

37. Depends on how they do it. Note this "objective" voter guide
This is the voter guide they're working toward distributing among churches. It's being passed along by the Bushies, but it's nominally non partisan. The intent is plain as day, but it uses code terms and carefully chosen non-preferential language.

How a "Christian" ought to vote is made clear, but it was also clearly designed to beat any serious legal challenges to its nonpartisan nature.

You can view it by going here and clicking on the top email's attachment

46. The church lists were made by the Bush/Cheney 04 campaign,
NOT by the churches. I know, because I downloaded them and looked all over the place. If you do the same, look under 'Properties' and you'll see who the files belong to.

Churches are NOT supposed to get voters to register, are they? Because that is on the list. Also, on one of the church lists, one of the questions is did they get the church directory. A big no-no, one you may remember from months ago.

I sent both of these files off to an organization that deals with the separation of church and state. They sue when they find someone who done wrong. :) I sent the files two or three days ago. Haven't heard anything back. But didn't think I would. I gave them all they need and it's up to them to go from there. :)

Incidentally, I don't know how they got the number, but about 8 or 10 enviro reps were called as the sequence of the callers were recognized. Luckily, none of them were given an opportunity to ask a question.

58. OMG I wasn't aware the official site has been closed to non-Americans!
Part of the curriculum in senior class English in Norwegian high schools is the political parties, and the election process of the US. Of course, this year, we teach that part in Fall term, because it's so topical. That our students be able to access the websites of the presidential candidates is a real boon - but I'm afraid Bush is really shooting himself in the foot when it comes to his reputation abroad by closing his website to international surfers. My students aren't predisposed to liking him to begin with, and when they learn they've been shut out of his website....oh my. We must try to teach these subjects impartially, so I cannot encourage them towards one candidate or the other - but it does seem as if Bush is doing, if not my job, then my private interests for me.

But what can you expect from a man who believes there are several internets, and whose Vice President doesn't know the difference between .com and .org even tho' he confidently announces urls to the public?

61. Wow, that crew really has problems with the url's, don't they
First this, then factcheck.com

Fucking idiots. They should just stick to inventing hydrogen cars, and leave the Internets to us.
