16. Haven't followed this closely - need an answer

A conservative at my office got into the whole "Liberal Media" nonsense with me at lunch yesterday. This I can handle - I also have Bartcop's "The Myth of the Liberal Media" to help me with that argument.

But I haven't been following the explosives story, and my colleague started challenging me with specifics: "why is this just coming out now? They've known about this since (last year?) The liberal media is just doing this to make Bush look bad. Blah blah blah" I asked what benefit a GE-owned and a Disney-owned network gets out of undermining the President, and he starts carrying on about Dan Rather and the falsified documents (another story I didn't follow very closely) and how I can't deny the NYT is liberal. He didn't buy my argument that it serves a different constituency than, say, the conservative San Diego paper. (Note: Listening to this guy, I think he gets all his news from Faux.)

So my question: why is the explosives issue coming up just now? Did the NYT break this one? (Oh, and he claims 60-minutes was going to feature it on Sunday, but the NYT "stole" it from them)

Because the Bushies weren't successful in suppressing the story until after the election, which was their plan.

So, let's see, who would have known about a cache of explosives that went missing? Well, the folks who took it naturally. So we don't need to keep the story secret from them.

The folks who are getting blown up on a daily basis are surely aware that there are people who mean them harm who have access to explosives, so there's no point in keeping them in the dark.

Our military folks seems pretty clued in, too. Remember the convoy that didn't run because the soldiers said they weren't going to go driving down an unsecured road with inadequately armored vehicles and without enough support? So the missing explosives seem to be on their minds as well.

Who didn't know about it? Well, you, me, and the rest of the American public have been puzzling about where the ordnance came from that keeps blowing things to bits in Iraq. Well, thanks to the recent disclosure, we need puzzle no more.

Now, why weren't we informed of this earlier? Who had this information in hand and declined to tell us? Think, think.

Is cable news claiming this was reported before, and ignored? They seem to be desperate to play it down (not surprising).

We don't have cable, so I can only tell what's on Faux based on the nonsense my right-wing colleagues are spouting that day. It does put me at a disadvantage sometimes.
