Who IS Acorn?
I was told in another forum that ACORN has "strong ties to the Democrat Party" I can't find anything proving this, does anyone here know what this person is talking about? And how do I refute this?

This is the ONLY mention of the 'word' Democrat I can find in relation to ACORN ..

"In St. Petersburg, ACORN submitted a false voter registration card for Charles Schuh. Schuh, a 68-year-old former Democratic mayor and city council member, was registered as a 30-year-old female Republican. While one may be tempted to write this off as simple sloppiness (a plausible thought, considering this is the same organization that failed to turn in thousands of voter registration cards on time, resulting in voters being denied the opportunity to participate in the primary), this is clearly another case of voter fraud. When Schuh asked to see his supposed registration card, he found that someone had signed his name but it “was certainly not signature.” In addition, Schuh noticed his social security number had been altered."

2. ACORN?
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation's largest community organization of low and moderate-income families, with over 150,000 member families organized into 750 neighborhood chapters in more than 60 cities across the country.

3. Here's the 'about' page from the ACORN site.
http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=2

They're an advocacy organization focused on inner-city and poor/working poor neighborhoods. They don't necessarily focus as partisan, but I think they endorsed Jesse Jackson back in the '80s when he was in the primaries for the Democratic presidential nomination. I know he's had some connection with them, over the years -- they're a poor, minority and workers' rights advocacy group. There's certainly no reason to suspect they'd have any affiliation with Republicans, when you know that, is there?

5. They are not dem, but the GOP does nothing for the poor
so of course the majority of urban dwellers and minorities they have registered will probably vote dem

8. Exactly -- I'll use the phrase ...
"guilt by association" but I don't mean to say they're necessarily guilty of anything -- the phrase explains the accusation in the original post. If their advocacy efforts are in communities that are comprised largely of minorities, their efforts will necessarily help people who traditionally vote for Democrats.

7. Acorn...
has been mentioned as a repugnant group involved with the appointing of poll watchers in Ohio. Several mentions in buzzflash articles.

4. ACORN fixes up inner-city houses so poor families can move in
I know they have done houses in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. A friend of mine lived in one.

9. ACORN apparently
has a LOT of trouble when it comes to voter fraud. Voter registrations etc.

http://www.epionline.org/study_detail.cfm?sid=78

this is where I'd like to find evidence that they do NOT have "very strong ties to the Democrat Party"

Short of telling the person to PROVE it, I'd like to have some back up too.

thanks.

10. Employment Policies Institute
is an industry group that opposes health care and minimum wage. Their website cleverly mimics the pro-health care and minimum wage group, the Economic Policy Institute. I don't doubt at all the Employment Policies Institute wouldn't like ACORN.

ACORN doesn't have official ties to the Democratic Party, no more so than the Urban League, NOW or the AFL-CIO. But clearly they support Democratic candidates.

11. If they are falsely registering people as Repubs, that says it all.
