Researching Local Elections (rural San Diego County)
Does anyone know the simplest way to check out local candidates (school boards, etc.)? I live in a rural area densely populated with hard-right nutjobs. Need to find out which candidates are religious crackpots, rightwing kooks, etc. (don't want to vote for stealth candidates posing as moderates, a common tactic around here) Local newspapers are conservative asswipes so little substantive info there.

What is the best way to get info? Would the local Dem party office have rundowns on all of these people? Or is there some other way to check them out?

Same question applies to judges, etc. and any other purportedly "nonpartisan" offices so this is a general issue that applies across the US.

2. I lived in El Cajon the last time the stealth candidates ran for school
board.

Fundies are some of the biggest liars around. But then lying for Jesus is OK I guess.

3. Try the Democratic Headquarters...
...even if it's downtown San Diego. They'll give you a good local number. The League of Women Voters usually does "equal time" pamphlets where the candidates submit statements and qualifications. That would include all the local races.

If you truly get stuck, call my former boss, George Mitrovich, at The City Club of San Diego. Maybe someone in the office will give you some information.

Yes, San Diego can at times be tough if you're a Democrat, but if you know where to look, you will find friends.

Me? I moved to Vermont. And I love it, but my roots are still in San Diego (Escondido -- Orange Glen High School, '69)

Kerry On!
