The Bush Campaign is playing the old "internal polls" game
Apparently the Bush Campaign is getting desperate. Hit with a flood of bad news this week, including a bunch of disappointing tracking polls in the media, they have to do something to reassure nervous supporters. So it looks like they're shopping around their "internal polls."

Posted by Jim Geraghty at National Review Online, just this afternoon:

Just heard from a source close to the campaign, tuned in to the conversations at the highest levels.

According to the Bushies, the last few days have seen a huge burst of momentum in their numbers.

They think Bush is ahead by a few points nationally. They expect the next round of tracking polls to show a bit of a bump.

http://www.nationalreview.com/kerry/kerry200410281407.asp
For what it's worth, I asked a source over at the DNC about this. The source, who just happens to also be "tuned in to the conversations at the highest levels" tells me that the Kerry campaign's polls are not showing any sort of Bush surge. In fact, they're showing precisely the opposite.

they make this shit up, their voters wont stay home knowing they were wasting their votes.

for bogus post-election charges that the Democrats "stole" the election after Kerry wins.

Manipulating internal polls to improve perception among the loyalists should be pretty effective...

If they are that good, they should take a victory lap to California. They only reason they are in Michigan is to try to flip it in case they loose FL which they must obviously think is quite possible.

9. This little passage gives it away.
Apparently, they don't believe in the "undecideds-break-for-the-challenger" theory. Or at least they're pretending not to.

"Undecided voters appear to be breaking Bush’s way - some days he has a slight lead, other days it’s right around 50-50. (Note this would be considerably better than the 1/3 calculated that Bush needs here."

31. A very short fairy tale...
Once upon a time, there lived a little bushy tailed squirrel named George. He was a very powerful little squirrel with a bad complexion and a temper to match.

One day while little George was busying himself thinking up some last minute tax cuts for his really really rich friends, the Raccoonigans, there came a knock at the door..."knock, knock, knock."

"Who is it? Who's there?" asked little bushy tailed George.

"It's democracy. And your ass is mine, beyotch!"

And they all lived happily ever after.
The end

I saw that claim earlier today. And I found myself reacting to it the same way I reacted to "the Russians took it!" and the "We be fearsome terraists, vote for Kerry!" video tape -- which is nearly pissing my pants laughing. My coworkers are starting to think I'm going nuts because every few hours I can't help but laugh at each desperate stunt they pull.

18. It will seem to be true though...the weekend effect.
The Bushies know that Friday night, Saturday, and sometimes Sunday are their best days for polling, and this is often reflected in the polls. So they suspect that there will be a "bush bump" coming soon, one that is completely an artifact, but one that will probably happen nevertheless. This way they can say "see, our polls predicted we would get momentum."

It is my great hope and desire that the effect is negligible, so that this piece of Bush spin also gets flushed down the shitter.

And they are lying like a teenager with beer on his breath at three A.M. while they do so, because they must play out the string even though they know no chance exists anyone will believe them....

The "internal polling" that they pay good money for to professionals hoping for future employment somewhere or other will be telling them what the scent of the air in my nostrils tells me: President Kerry will win Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida, and the national vote totals will be 52% for President Kerry, 47% for their cheerleader out of Andover, and 1% sundry others.

The same internal polls leaked to Drudge on the eve of the 2000 elections showing Bush "winning" California? The same polls juxtaposed to the acutely, painfully accurate Democrat polling that was supported by few media polls? The same polling that showed Bush winning the popular vote?

The same BS. Fooled you twice America? Never even fooled them ONCE.

Any source taking these disreputable sources seriously has zero credibility for reporting the time of day.

Have the equivalent credibility of Fox News' famous "Some people say" prefix to whatever lie they're about to tell. The * campaign is torpedoing right into the ground.

This is the time to really turn it on, GOTV time. A wide margin of victory, nice long coattails for Kerry/Edwards to sweep in a few Senate/House Dems with them.

Surge in bush's poll numbers? Makes perfect sense to me! Stories coming out of Florida about further disenfranchisement of African-American vote? Logic and common sese dictates that more African-Americans would therefore want to vote for Republicans. Sure it would!

Failed to provide security for weapons depot in Iraq? Explosives taken by insurgents and used to blow up American soldiers? That makes me feel safe. Bush will keep me safe and that proves it! So there!
