The Silver State for Kerry?

By Don Hazen, AlterNet. Posted October 27, 2004.

Early voting is underway in Nevada, and Kerry is ahead by 7,000 votes. But there's a lot more at play in the Silver State. Story Tools

It is election crunch time as the end game shifts into high gear, and the presidential race is too close to call in a number of states – that is, if one trusts the polls.

And as election day closes in, there is a separate question: with the predicted chaos and glitches, will we know who has won on election night, or will we have an ongoing donnybrook long after Nov. 2?

A very close race is certainly the case in Nevada, where the tension is already rising as early vote totals are being tallied. While current polls, particularly the Zogby tracking poll, have Bush winning Nevada by a few points, the early voting returns, already in record numbers, suggest something else.

1. How can they know that yet, no votes have been tallied.

4. They are probably assuming a 1/1 ratio
Every Democratic voter for Kerry and every GOP voter for Bush. Just a guess. How they allocate independents is beyond me. Certainly imprecise.

I'm in Las Vegas and there are about 15 or 16 early voting venues open every day, from October 16 thru tomorrow. We need a huge edge coming out of southern Nevada to win statewide, more than 7000 votes.

2. We don't know that he's actually ahead in votes
we just know that 7,000 more Dems have shown up to the polls than Repukes. We don't know how any of them voted. Nevertheless, the early signs are very encouraging!

3. Very encouraging
Even if there isn't an official tally yet, it's very encouraging!

5. That's shitty.
I hate with my whole heart, when anybody in the media says anything about actual votes before ALL voting booths are closed. I don't want to hear a thing about the numbers of Maine *actual votes* until 100% of Hawaii is counted.

If there's a problem with voting, like intimidation or e-voting shenanigans, that's the only thing to report. Not exit polls, not 7% of the precinct reports, etc.

There should be a Federal law...

Why does the media hate America so much?
