Is our country so sad that we care who a baseball player votes for? |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 03:47 PM by omnithrope
It really saddens me to think that people's votes will be swayed not by issues, or party affiliation, or (HEAVEN FORBID) their own critical thinking, but rather by a BASEBALL player.
How does knowing what a man-who-throws-a-ball-for-a-living thinks affect my vote? None.
If people vote for Bush based on a baseball player's endorsement (or movie star, or musician) then we have bigger problems than I ever would have imagined.
GRRR!
*rant off*

1. Why not? Apparently we care who NASCAR drivers vote for. |
|
Even after they say they don't know shit about the issues.

most players and news media in baseball call shiling a bloated ego maniac jerk
I would not worry that much, he's an ass.

7. Eh, I disagree, a bit. But not that much. :P |
|
Mostly because Sprinsteen is a musician, and they tend, at least, to be a tiny bit more introspective than, say, someone who drives in a circle. That, and his message has always been heavily politicized.
On the flip side, anyone who is basing their vote on a celebrity endorsement really has been brainwashed by the consumer culture. ;)

Because things like atheletes, killer sharks, Laci Peterson have been a MAJOR feature of the news for many years now

This isn't about YOUR vote.

We *DO* have some bigger problems.

10. My Psychoanalysis of an Obsession. |

Let's face it. Contemporary American culture is one of superficiality and materialism. The rightwing loves jocks because they fantasize about a world of supermen and jocks are representative of that.

11. Fascists rely on the stupidity of the populace. |
|
It takes a really stupid SOB to absorb the lies and support a corrupt regime. Neocons think (largely correctly) that the people of the US are stupid. A good example is the fairy tale they are floating about Russian commandos taking the explosives from Al Qaqaa. You'd have to be one dumb comic-book reading shlub to believe that nonsense. But the neocons realize that millions of idiots will believe it. Getting a baseball player to stump for them is silly but not half as bad as the outright lies they tell.

13. Keep it in the context of New England. No WS champion in 86 years... |
|
Now, Curt Shilling, one of the engineers of that stunning Red Sox run, is stumping for * in New Hampshire, a battleground state that went for * in 2000 by a razor-thin margin, thanks mostly to the 22,198 votes for Nader that year.
The right-wing is trying to bottle some of that 86-year World Series starvation-turned-to-hysterical-gratitude into some New Hampshire votes, plain and simple.

14. One thing to remember |
|
is that Kerry is a "Massachusetts Liberal". He also has the advantage of having lived there for a little more than Shilling's mere season.
