Horse race for KY Senate seat

WASHINGTON -- The man responsible for getting more Democrats elected to the U.S. Senate said Wednesday that the race between Republican incumbent Jim Bunning and Democrat Daniel Mongiardo is one of the closest in the country and could help tip the balance of power in the upper chamber.
"We do have a horse race in horse country," said New Jersey Sen. Jon Corzine, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Polls show the comfortable lead that Bunning had as recently as mid-September has vanished over the past couple of weeks and that Mongiardo is within striking distance. A Bluegrass Poll released Sunday by the (Louisville) Courier-Journal put Bunning's lead within the margin of error.
In another sign that the race has tightened, the Cook Political Report, a respected, Washington-based newsletter that handicaps political campaigns across the country, now lists the race as a toss-up. As recently as last week, the publication had categorized the seat as "likely Republican."
