Now Rove is desperate, what might he do?

The explosives story has lasted all week and today's confirmation by KSTC, the St. Paul ABC affiliate (with FINE and cautious reporting, by the way), coupled with all the spin from the administration for the past four days, has insured that the story will live strongly through the weekend.


Rove & Co. have to leave the defensive and gain the offensive. How? They can't have any credibility floating other possibilities about the missing explosives. They have to claim the problem is small and go on. But what with?

They have to trot out a story which will really over-shadow the missing explosives.

What would that be? Something on the order of their lame terror tape? Probably not.

All I can figure is a nasty personal attack. Watch for a Monday morning disclosure that Kerry, in the past, has done something horrific. It will be completely false but too complicated to unravel in only a few days.

The terror tape makes me hopeful. It might be a sign that they've shot their wad. It has the smell of desperation to it.

But . . . I hope Kerry's people are watching Rove like a hawk. Right now he's a cornered rat, which means we've really got to keep out guard up.
