Kerry is defending more states but the same EVs as Bush |
|
Kerry is defending the Gore states of IA, MN, WI, NM, MI, and PA. Total EVs: 65
Bush is defending FL, OH, CO, WV, and NV: 65
Tell the media to shut the hell up and count!

1. my favorite toy is this map..... |

There are some others like it.... but when you start clicking and moving states around.... you can see the many possible winning combos for Kerry (and Bush, too). I think it presents a very good picture of Kerry's situation: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2004/politics101/politics101_ecmap.html

I have to say, I've never understood why NH was Republican. It makes no sense for the area. It's kind of like the book, What's the Matter With Kansas - NH is filled with people who are voting against their best interests. What is odd is that they are surrounded by states like Mass and Vermont (not sure about Maine) that are liberal.
I know New Hampshire. They have a chronically depressed economy, high unemployment, a lot of people living on the edge of poverty. And they vote Republican. Go figure.

4. Kerry isn't defending any states Gore won by a large margin! |
|
Iowa, MN, WI, NM, MI, Pa, they were all swing states in 2000, but in 2000 Bush LED for the most part in those swing states and it was Gore who pulled off the close wins. So of course they were going to be swing states in 04 as well, but none of them were "solid" Gore states.
However, I don't think Bush thought he was going to have to defend West Virginia, Arkansas, and Colorado against some Massachusetts Liberal :)

are not really going anywhere.
The other three add up to 10+7+5=22
Bush is defending OH and FL, and to a lesser extent NV (I don't think the others will go our way..I'd be pleasently surprised if they did). This comes to 27+20+5=52.
Bush is defending more. Even if you figure Kerry is seriously in danger of losing MN, he'd still be defending less...or if you say Bush is not in danger of losing NV -- That would bring it to 32 for Kerry and 47 for Bush.
