Wilmington, North Carolina) The Wilmington Star-News Thursday pulled its endorsement of Republican state Senate candidate Woody White after the GOP ran a campaign attacking his lesbian opponent.
White, fighting a tough race for reelection against Democrat Julia Boseman (pictured), bought ads and sent out a mass mailer this week warning voters that Boseman could become the first openly gay legislator in North Carolina history and would only fight for gay issues if elected. (story) .
The flyer included a letter from New Hanover County GOP Chairman Charlton Allen noting that Boseman had accepted thousands of dollars in donations from out-of-state gay and lesbian groups and individuals.
"We have chosen to share this information with you because we are proud of Woody White's conservative, pro-family approach to public service," the letter said.
