1. Not so fast. I think they will be relieved, but wary. |

As the saying goes, once burned, twice shy. Many countries will be waiting to see what President Kerry brings to the table at the U.N., and will make their decisions from there. They will at least be willing to hear what he has to say, however, as opposed to sitting hostage through more flip-flopping demands from Bush.
But I suspect that the rift between the U.S. and Europe, for instance, will continue to grow, even despite a Kerry win. Europe is establishing itself as a global power independent of U.S. authority. It was happening anyway, but Bush and the neo-conservatives have only accelerated this process. And the neo-conservatives will still be around for quite some time, even if Kerry wins.

4. Also, they've had time to realize how little they need us. |
|
By thinking ourselves indispensable, we became dispensable.
The United States is no longer the world's only superpower. We can't even really call ourselves a superpower. We are backrupt economically and militarily. We have nukes, but so does everybody else.
Hubris and George. Now we'll take a backseat to Brazil, and China, and India. We don't manufacture anything, or invent anything, and our natural resources are being polluted and used up or made unusable.
Yeah, we're really hot stuff.

A Kerry win literally saves the world. I truly believe that.

3. You underestimate the rest of the world's intelligence |

America is a rogue nation that does not follow international laws, abrogates treaties and bullies nations by any means necessary- including genocide- to further the interests of its (now often multinational) corporations.
America is the new "evil empire" just as the Reaganites intended- and the rest of the world- especially Canada and Europe- know damn well who we are and what we stand for. Their governments aren't fooled for a second by Kerry's platitudes. No matter how good his intentions, the far right still holds so much power in this country that the best anyone abroad can hope for is mixed messages.

6. But they understand what's at risk here. |
|
Kerry is the man riding the bucking bronco of the U.S. They can either help him out and tame the beast, or let him go and risk him getting bucked off, and the stallion running wild.
Nobody wants another Bush in office, but the world may get another crazy Republican if they don't help us out. So I think they'll be glad to help out, to try to show that Kerry's way works and Bush's way doesn't.

I didn't mean to imply that they aren't desperate for Kerry to dislodge Bush- all I'm saying is that, even with Clinton in office, the Republicans and their surrogates in the American media made certain that the US remained a rogue nation. They harbor no illusions that Kerry can change that- at least not in four years.
Canada's PM just announced today that they aren't sending any troops to Iraq if Kerry is elected. Why should they? My guess is that other countries can and should feel the same, at least until the US decides to act responsibly.

7. We're not just reaching out to governments |
|
We're reaching out to ordinary people. Clinton may not have always done things European governments liked. For example, I don't think he backed the Land Mines treaty, or the ICC (I'm not sure if he changed his stance on this later), but nevertheless the world still loved him. They at least got a sense he was listening to their concerns - and he did.
While electing Kerry may not make the world love us right away, they'd at least be willing to talk, listen to Kerry's ideas, and at the minimum give us some respect for booting Bush out.

10. America is still a dangerous nation |
|
with an ignorant, intolerant and increasingly fundamentalist public.
Governments abroad may work with Kerry- at arms length- but until he proves he can deliver (which is, IMO, unlikey so long as Republicans control so much of the government) then it's foolhardy to expect them to embrace us. I sure wouldn't, if I were one their members of Parliament.

11. The worls IS MUCH BIGGER than US, Europe and Canada |
|
As a citizen of the thirld-world, I'm offended when I see that the discussion on whether "the world" comes back to us is reduced to Europe and in some cases Candada. That's a tiny tiny tiny part of the world in terms of population, and a very small part in terms of cultural and economic power.

12. This Canadian wants to say how admiring I am of all you wonderful |
|
people here at DU....I have read many posts where some of you have said you are shamed by what the world thinks of you....You must know that we non-Americans realize that what your country has done for the last 4 years has been because of the crazy crusade of George Bush...He is obviously a nut-case who thinks he's doing God's work and is "democratizing" the world....We know how the situation in Florida allowed him to slip into the presidency....We really do like you American people (at least here in Canada, anyway)... I heard the polster Zogby, on Jon Stewart's show tonight say he believes Kerry will win....I think so too....Anyway....:loveya:
