Islamist group: We have Iraq explosives

Staff and agencies
Thursday October 28, 2004

A militant Islamist group today claimed to be in possession of a large portion of the explosives that went missing from a munitions depot facility in Iraq.

The group, calling itself Al-Islam's Army Brigades, made the claim in a video broadcast today and warned that it will use the explosives if foreign troops threaten Iraqi cities.

Its video statement said:"Heroic Mujahideen have managed by the grace of God and by coordinating with a...number of the officers and the soldiers of the American intelligence to obtain a very huge amount of the explosives that were in the al-Qaqaa facility, which was under the protection of the American forces."

The video was obtained by the Associated Press, but the group's claim could not be independently verified.

The speaker in the video was surrounded by masked, armed men standing in front of a black banner with the group's name on it.

1. "Show me"
If they've got the goods, they should quit posturing and show them.
They obviously have a camera. Would it break their backs to video the explosives to prove that they have them?

3. but

What would be adequate proof? Realistically, only photos they may have taken while actually removing boxes from Al Qa Qa'a. Even then, it might have been some other group of Iraqis. Same problem with showing glass vials, white powders, or even a small plastic explosive detonation.

The way they'll prove it is by a bunch more car bombings with the stuff. Realistically, the previous car bombings are enough evidence. It's hard to doubt that they have a couple more tons of the stuff. And to think that secret services spent many many millions on trying to find out which terrorist groups divvied up a 200 lb lot of Czech Semtex plastic explosive in the 1980s and early 1990s...by comparison this is a cheap and limitless and untraceable bonanza for Al Qaeda's planners to go after to strike with in the West.

2. Eh
I'm sure somebody there has them, but that sounds like BS. They're threatening to use it but not using it now? I don't get it.

13. I think it's a bluff.
As others have said, if they had them, they would have shown them. Anyway, what difference does it make? Do we know one terrorist group in Iraq from another? They all hate us, and one or more of them now has tons of explosives to use against our soldiers.
