Civil rights groups representing blacks, Hispanics and the disabled accused Republican Party workers on Thursday of trying to keep U.S. minorities from voting.

"In state after state, Republican officials and operatives are working to deny American citizens the right to vote," said Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

Jim Dickson of the American Association of People with Disabilities said a survey released on Oct. 19 reported that 22 percent of the disabled said their eligibility to vote had been challenged by poll workers.

Dickson said, "If they (Republicans) were not cowardly, they would meet with us and they would say to their people across the country, knock it off, this is wrong."

1. Voter Challenges
Challengers MAY NOT approach a voter directly. An election judge must be present.

Challengers MAY NOT ask questions directly of a voter. They MAY NOT fish for a reason to challenge. They must suspect OF THEIR OWN KNOWLEDGE or have a REASON TO BELIEVE that the voter is ineligible. The election judge asks the questions and accepts the answers in good faith.

Race, accent, clothing is NOT A LEGITIMATE REASON for a challenge.

If any challenger is challenging everybody or being intimidating or doing this just to slow down the proceedings, election judges have the right to eject such people.

Please, if you see a problem, call the voter protection line.
