LEE COUNTY— Many people are calling this election year the most destructive year in Lee County because of theft and vandalism. Both political parties have said thousands of their campaign signs have been stolen. The Democratic Party reported one of the worst cases of vandalism Wednesday night when two of their vehicles were damaged. The Kerry/Edwards signs were destroyed and both vehicles had flat tires.
"In the last couple of weeks we've seen the number of signs being stolen really escalate. We've seen intimidation, with bumper stickers being ripped off from cars, people getting into words at the polls," said Jason Whittet, Lee County Democratic Party.
Unreported acts of political vandalism are popping up across Lee County as well. Local Democratic leaders say in just the past 24 hours one of their Kerry/Edwards signs was destroyed, leaving only the frame.
But the Democrats aren't the only ones experiencing this problem. Local Republican leaders say hundreds upon hundreds of Bush/Cheney signs have been reported missing, stolen, even damaged in just the past month.
