Again Poppy coming to *'s rescue: *'s community service questioned
Did court give Bush
push into PULL?

Former President George H.W. Bush is defending his son against suggestions that Dubya's early community service wasn't voluntary - but court-ordered. Bush 43 has often pointed to his 1973 work with a Houston program for troubled teens as the source of his "compassionate conservatism."

He wrote in his 1999 autobiography, "A Charge to Keep," that "my friend John White ... asked me to come help him run" Project PULL, the Professional United Leadership League.

"I was intrigued by John's offer ... Now I had a chance to help people."

But some former veterans of the now-defunct inner-city program argue that, in reality, Bush 41 called in a favor from his friend White because of a brush Dubya had had with the law.
