Entering the final weekend of the campaign, a new Granite State poll has good news for Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry and Republican Gov. Craig Benson. A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows Kerry leading President George W. Bush 50 to 46 percent in the race for the state's four electoral votes. Independent Ralph Nader draws 1 percent and 3 percent are undecided. An early October UNH / WMUR poll showed Bush with a 50 to 45 percent lead.
Benson holds a 47 to 44 percent lead over Democratic challenger John Lynch, with 1 percent preferring another candidate and 9 percent remaining undecided. UNH's early October poll showed Lynch and Benson tied at 43 percent each. The Survey Center polled 758 self-described likely voters Monday through Wednesday. The margin of error is 3.6 percent.
In the Presidential poll, both candidates draw heavily from among their own party faithful, but Kerry leads among self-described independents, 61 to 26 percent. Among registered undeclared voters, Kerry leads 57 to 34 percent. Kerry also leads among self-described "swing voters," 54 to 35 percent.
There is also a clear gender gap. Kerry leads among women, 54 to 41 percent, while Bush leads among men, 52 to 45 percent.
