2. The only way it will help us
Is if the Kerry campaign constantly reminds us that Bin Laden is alive and well today because Bush took his eye off the ball by invading Iraq.

My suggestion for a new ad: couple the videotape of Bush saying he's not interested in bin Laden with bin Laden tape today. And run this ad constantly in the battlegrounds.

10. Reminder no longer needed. OBL advertises Bush's failure himself
Kerry need only remind of Bush's failure in the WOT.

6. Hurts bush
imo - Osama looks fine. Thought bush was gonna hunt him down, smoke him out blah, blah. He lost the sucker and went after SH. Now SH sits in jail, American troops are dying in the desert for what? And besides that he failed to plan to secure the explosives and now the 'terrrraists' have them. I'm surprised OBL didn't say, 'oh and btw, thanks for the RDX.

13. I think it's a wash...
Those who support Bush* will try to use this in their normal 'fear-terra-fear' manner.

Those of us who support Kerry will see this as yet another in a long list of failures on the part of an incompetent, corrupt administration.

Swing voters must be so disconnected from events that I doubt this will have an effect on them.

Almost everybody has made up their minds. Pox News will spin it for Bush, trying to claim that now we really need Our Strong Leader to save us from Evil Osama (who Bush said really didn't matter much) -- but only the freeptards who are voting for him anyhow take Pox seriously. The opposite spin, of course (the truth, really), is the fact that the guy who did 9/11 is still out there, Bush didn't catch him like he promised, and he's still mocking and threatening us. That fact doesn't help Bush. I think the positive and negative spins will cancel each other out and the few people who are still undecided will decide how to vote on the basis of the same issues that concerned them in the first place.

18. Hard to say.
My first instinct is to say that this proof that OBL is alive and at large is damning for Bush.

However, seeing the Pro-Bush media spin-fest over this, and seeing how it has reduced coverage of other anti-Bush news down to a series of pro-Bush spin soundbites, I sense major, and I mean MAJOR Rovian tactics.

26. zero impact
Bushies believe what they believed before. Those of us who believed that Kerry is the better candidate before will continue to believe exactly that.

Those who haven't already made up their minds won't be able to decide wheter this help Bush or hurts him. In the end, they will discard it as an unknown quantity.

Net effect: 0

28. COMBINED with missing explosives, hurts huge.
1. TONS of missing high yield military grade explosives.
2. Confirmation that Osama is STILL on the loose and in good health.

Gives us:

3. We can only HOPE he hasn't gotten his hands on the stuff.

Hit the media with this concern. Make the two stories the same issue. VERY, VERY bad for Bush if all of a sudden we have the media pointing out that not only did they screw up the explosives handling but that that screw-up may have ARMED Osama with some serious weaponry.

29. Depends on media spin. OBL's appearance is designed to hurt Kerry...
For the reason that every time that the terror-warnings are issued, * gets an average 2.75 uptick in the polls, regardless of the economy, or anything else going on.

True, there is no terror-warning yet, but having the OBL boogeyman on all networks invokes that fear-inducing flavor.

Depends on how the media will spin this...

Government terrorist warnings boost President Bush's approval ratings, a Cornell sociologist finds
FOR RELEASE: Oct. 4, 2004
Contact: Susan S. Lang
Office: 607-255-3613
E-Mail: SSL4@cornell.edu

ITHACA, N.Y. -- When the federal government issues a terrorist warning, presidential approval ratings jump, a Cornell University sociologist finds. Interestingly, terrorist warnings also boost support for the president on issues that are largely irrelevant to terrorism, such as his handling of the economy.

Robb Willer, assistant director of the Sociology and Small Groups Laboratory at Cornell and a doctoral candidate in sociology who expects his Ph.D. in May 2005, tracked the 26 times that a federal government agency reported an increased threat of terrorist activity in the United States between February 2001 and May 2004. He also tracked the 131 Gallup Polls that were conducted during the same period. He then conducted several time-series and regression analyses on the relationship between government-issued terror warnings and Gallup Poll data on approval ratings of President George W. Bush.

"Results showed that terror warnings increased presidential approval ratings consistently," says Willer. "They also increased support for Bush's handling of the economy. The findings, however, were inconclusive as to how long this halo effect lasts."
<snip>
When Willer linked the warnings to presidential ratings from 2001 to 2004, he found that each terror warning prompted, on average, a 2.75 point increase in the president's approval rating the following week.
