IMAGINE THIS: John Doe, a known murderer kills your entire family
But first, imagine he had sent you a letter, stating he was going to kill your family.

You report the threat to the chief of police who... promptly goes on vacation and assigns no one to investigate.

Imagine you find your family murdered, and the entire hideous crime is caught on a security camera, which reveals the murderer to be, none other than John Doe.

Imagine the chief of police vowing on television, for the cameras, to bring your family's killer to justice.

But instead of pursuing their killer, he focuses all of his attention on catching shoplifters at the local WalMart.

Imagine the police chief is running for re-election, and on the eve of the election, John Doe appears at your door, taunting you because he has gone unpunished.

QUESTION: Do you vote to re-elect the chief of police?

there are so many people who would steal vote "YES".

BTW, shop lifting has reached unprecedented levels.

8. Not sure yet about Sunday
I know what you mean about the negative campaign. I got at least 10 pieces of smear campaign literature from that cretin Regola this week. I got a big red magic marker and wrote "REFUSED" across the address and stuck it back in my mailbox. Not sure what the post office does with it, but I don't want that stuff stinking up even my trash can.

I post on a group that doesn't allow quoting other sources. Links are allowed, but I don't want to attract new freepers to DU, and the undecideds would say it's a biased source.

This little analogy says so much. I appreciate you letting me use your words. I think it will make a difference.

13. Very good, except if you want
repukes to get it you need to change the WalMart analogy. Concern about shoplifting is a big TV dinner topic of conversation with them and is equal in importance to murder. After all, it tends to increase the price they pay and is always perpetrated by minorities.

Perhaps catching TV evangelists ripping off their flock would work.

15. How about if the police chief concentrates all of his efforts
on catching the local graffiti artist. We had this guy "MOOK" in Pittsburgh that drove the police crazy for years.

Mook" taunts the city Public Works Department from the top of the 10th Street Bridge across the Monongahela River. (Steve Mellon, Post-Gazette)

25. He's been arrested several times over the years
Once he was arrested on suspicions of having weapons of mass defilement or WMD's (cans of spray paint) only to find that the bulge in his jacket was only a bunch of magic markers. Another time he etched his tag line onto the window of the city's graffiti clean-up crew's van while the workers were on a lunch break.

The story of Mook has been ongoing and interesting to say the least.

19. Though, to truly fit the analogy,
Mr. Police Chief would need to arrest the CEO of WalMart, kill about 20,000 WalMart employees, and then declare that he's brought those responsible for the slaughter of your family to justice.

People should have the right to vote on their police officers, and give them a vote of "no confidence." The real question is, when are people going to get a "none of the above" option on their federal election ballots?

Amazing how easy this is, if put in the right context.

Unfortunately a lot of SHEEP are awaiting the Rapture and the Second Coming and President Cheney knows this.

Unfortunately, the Clueless Witless Sock Puppet sitting on Cheney's lap has no idea about any of this either as he is also a sheep and tool of the NeoCon criminals.

39. Hey PA Demo -- I changed it a little bit
Suppose your were a member of the Simpson's family (let's say you were Homer).

At a certain point, let's say three years ago, you got a letter from a fiend (say, Sideshow Bob) threatening to kill your whole family.

As a citizen of Springfield, you contact Chief Clancy Wiggum and give him the letter -- he promptly goes on vacation (probably to cut brush).

A month later, you find Marge, Bart, Lisa and what's-her-name brutally murdered. Wiggum swears to "smoke-out" the perpetrator.

For the next three years, Wiggum stakes out the Quickee Mart and the Try-n-Save, arresting Jimbo Jones and his crew at regular intervals for shoplifting.

All of a sudden, one Friday evening, you turn on the TV and there is Sideshow Bob, laughing that evil laugh and taunting Clancy Wiggum.

The following Tuesday, it's election day - will Homer vote for four more years of Clancy?

----------------
This is the version I sent around.

Tut-tut

33. Yes! But only if ...
... there are scary wolves stalking me in the woods.

Verrrrry scarrrry ... woooooolves ... in the woooooods!

Good post. I used that same analogy with some ReDUHblican friends of mine a while ago. I also asked how they would they feel if their husband/wife/daughter/son/father/mother had been murdered, the police said catching the killer was their number one priority, but then just six months later the police said they didn't think much about the killer, they weren't concerned about him, and he wasn't a priority.

Of course they said they'd be angry. Then I explained Bush's statements about Bin Laden and how he went from being "our number one priority" (9-13-01 Bush speech, "dead or alive" and all that) to "not our priority" (3-13-02 Bush press conference) six months later. Not surprisingly they didn't even know about Bush's about-face on Bin Laden.

How can anyone vote for someone who said Bin Laden was "not a priority" just six months after 9/11????? Tell that to the families of the 9/11 victims! Tell that to people like me who give a damn about this country! Can someone put together and ad with a clip of the latest Bin Laden video warning, followed by the clip of Bush saying "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." at the March 13, 2002 press conference?

Which reminds me, did anyone here tell Tony Blair that we're going it alone? I was going to, but I got busy. In the debate Bush told us to tell Tony Blair that we're going it alone (I guess so Tony could pull out the British troops? I dunno) and I certainly wouldn't want to disobey a direct order from our commander-in-chief. Wouldn't it be funny if Blair got thousands of letters from Americans:

Dear Mr. Blair,

I'm writing on behalf of President George W. Bush, who has asked me to inform you that we're going it alone. In light of this new development, I'm sure you'll want to begin withdrawing British troops from Iraq as soon as possible.

I regret that President Bush was not able to convey this news personally, but he has been quite busy of late, campaigning and learning to debate without smirking.

All the best and say hello to the Queen for me when you see her.

Cheers,

etc. etc.

Like Jon Stewart, sometimes my brain hurts ...

37. Very clever!
I would add the following (just because I think it adds to this analogy).

IMAGINE THIS: John Doe, a known murderer kills your entire family But first, imagine he had sent you a letter, stating he was going to kill your family.

You report the threat to the chief of police who... promptly goes on vacation and assigns his second in command to establish a task force that never meets.

Imagine you find your family murdered, and the entire hideous crime is caught on a security camera, which reveals the murderer to be, none other than John Doe, who then broadcasts on the Internet that he IS responsible.

Imagine the chief of police vowing on television, for the cameras, to bring your family's killer to justice and promising not to exploit this tragedy in his reelection campaign.

But instead of pursuing their killer, he focuses all of his attention on catching shoplifters at the local WalMart. He claims, through extensive police work, that the shoplifters and John Doe are partners and BOTH are threats to the community. The shoplifters are supplying John Doe materials to murder. When that is disproved, the Chief claims, the shoplifters are stealing possible weapons. When that is disproved, the Chief proclaims the shoplifters are THINKING about stealing weapons. When that is disproved and the shoplifters are caught, the Chief says that at least we have stopped very dangerous criminals, even though they only possess basic Wal-Mart crap.

Imagine the police chief and his second in command are running for re-election, and despite his earlier promise to you, he splashes the murder all over the TV and tells everyone how much safer we all are that the shoplifters have been caught, even though now Wal-Mart is being robbed by people with weapons and many police officers are now dead. And, on the eve of the election, John Doe appears at your door, taunting you because he has gone unpunished.

QUESTION: Do you vote to re-elect the chief of police and his second in command?
