Good News (IMHO) Colorado prop 36........
looks like it iwill get defeated. I pray the polls are correct. ...For those whom may not be following this is proprotionate representation that will take out 9 EV's and slice them up..probably in a 5/4 ....chances of a 3rd party getting 1/9 is very slim.

***I posted here because this effects the entire country and 2004 election

1. I was sorting of hoping it passes...
Because I still believe that the scrub will win the majority vote in Colorado. (But what do I know. I live in Seoul, Korea.) Here's hoping Kerry takes Colorado and all 9 votes.

4. It's lose-lose once it hits the Supreme Court.
Kerry wins, USSC upholds, Kerry gets 5 EV.
Kerry loses, USSC overturns the referendum, Kerry gets 0.

10. Your missing what will REALLY happen
Most legal scholars are saying it is unconstitutional to go to the polls and vote for p36 NOT knowing HOW it will effect the 2004 outcome in CO......IF IT DIDN'T COUNT FOR 2004 I WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR IT.......so

Kerry win with a 5/4....challenged in SCOTUS, they overturn it and Bushit gets all 9 OR IF CO becomes the deciding state in 2004 if could go to the Congress!

We would be the laughing stock of the country.

13. I'm more than "sorta" hoping......
I voted for it, and believe it's necessary.

The EC has to go, and it will go in parts.

3. I'd love to see this happen nationally, but the penalty for the first few
States would be horrendous. I entertained supporting the measure because if Kerry does not gain CO, then at least he'd get some of our electoral votes. But, I do have to agree with those who point out the adverse effect on Colorado for the future, if our EV's were automatically split. If 20 or 30 states were doing the same simultaneously, I'd be a BIG supporter... but, that is not the case.

6. It would be horrendous.

South Dakota would wield the same electoral power as Pennsylvania, which is one electoral vote. States like New Hampshire and Arkansas would have absolutely no voice, given even numbers of electors and closely divided populaces.

Edit: oh, btw, if all states did this, we could get about a 53-45% victory and still lose the Electoral College vote.

5. I would prefer it pass on principle...

If you are going to have an electoral college, at least make sure that states have to allot their votes proportionally... Truthfully, though, Colorado shouldn't do this on their own. They should not "disarm" unless the other states do, too. That would require a federal amendment, though. Something to add to the progressive wishlist? It might be a small "step" in the right direction with the electoral college, if complete repeal is not possible.

9. Here Was A Concept From 2000
A bunch of us floated around...

Since the electoral vote is based on House Representation plus the Two Senators...Colorado gets 9 for the 7 Congressional Districts and 2 Senators.

Under the plan we worked up, the popular vote winner statewide would get the two Senate votes, the remaining votes would be divided along how the candidate did in the various Congressional districts.

One reason I don't favor this concept is right now we're not in control of both Houses and the redistricting of the past 20 years has stacked the deck against Democrats.

But in theory I feel this would be a far more equitable system than what currently exists.

7. Lets get this straight once and for all....
we are NOT losing CO. I've been canvassing, phone banking...and paying a HELL of a lot of attention. Support for Kerry is much stronger here than it was for Clinton when he won in '96.

This year...CO is fucking BLUE!!! AND let this be the last time I have to say this.

8. The EV is obsolete ...
It should be done away with. It was the only way in a time
when communication took days, if not weeks. In a society
with instant communication across the country and the world,
the Electorial College is a dinosaur. One person, one vote !!!
What a concept ...

12. I agree that the EV should be done away with...
Interesting thread; I thought that most would wish for the prop too because at least Kerry would get something in a close race...but I now understand why it's NOT good for this election.

11. I voted against it
And i would not want it to go national. This only breaks the Electorial College. We need to get rid of it all together
