From The You Can't Make This Shit Up Files
Raw Story has the story of the Republicans filing a complaint against a radio show for urging voters to defeat David Drier.

The General Counsel to the National Republican Congressional Committee has filed a complaint against a California radio show for advocating the defeat of Republican Rep. David Dreier, saying the show’s advocacy is illegal and goes beyond their first amendment rights. :wow:

RushSeanMichealLauraNeiletc., however, are perfectly within their rights in trashing John Kerry and every other Democrat --- and making a tidy profit at it.

All these so-called "good christian Republicans"...they seem to think God endorses lying and hypocrisy. I think they're in for one HELL of a shock.

1. Yep, here's some more about it
From radio trade site www.allaccess.com

A complaint to the FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION by Rep. DAVID DREIER (R-CA) through the NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE charges that KFI-A/LOS ANGELES afternoon hosts JOHN KOBYLT and KEN CHIAMPOU should be criminally punished for "felonies" for doing shows advocating DREIER's defeat in his re-election campaign. DREIER is the target of JOHN AND KEN's "Political Human Sacrifice" campaign, which aims to make a Republican Congressman pay for not fighting illegal immigration strongly enough.

The team has done remote broadcasts from rallies outside DREIER's GLENDORA office, and DREIER used transcripts of the live broadcasts to claim that the shows violated Federal law by advocating a candidate's defeat, an interpretation rejected by CLEAR CHANNEL lawyers, according to KOBYLT, who tells ALL ACCESS that "when we went after (former CALIFORNIA Democratic Gov.) GRAY DAVIS and supported ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER and DREIER was SCHWARZENEGGER's campaign coordinator, he didn't complain then. Republicans have had a free ride for 15 years from AM talk radio," KOBYLT laughed, "and now one show goes after one guy over one issue, and we should be sent to prison." JOHN AND KEN spent much of THURSDAY's show skewering DREIER for the attempt to muzzle them.

2. Those two are major assholes though
They hate Dreier most because of his "soft" immigration policies and California RWers are incredibly xenophobic. His gayness is a convenient addenda to their hatred.

4. I wouldn't even bother to file a counter-complaint. I'd just file their
exact complaint with the words David Drier replaced with Rush Limbaugh or Hannity or <insert any FOX and many CNN talking heads here>

5. It's a friviolous complaint,
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 08:28 AM by djg21
but may be we should hope the Repukes prevail! Can you imagine the fines that would have to be imposed on all the broadcasters with wingnit commentators? WABC and Fox News would be forced off the air, Rush would no longer be able to afford his oxycontin habit, andhannity would have to go back to his construction job.

What's good for the goose . . .

7. Problem is
I would guess, if the Repuke complaint prevails, they will use it to go after Air America, Ed Schultz, Pacifica, and others, but not Limbaugh, Hannity, or Faux. This whole thing smacks of Repuke double standard.

It's hard to feel sorry for the Repukes when one of their own right wing talk radio shows turns against them. And now they want to whine about it? I hope Ken and John not only win, but file a counter suit against the Repuke Nazional Committee for filing a frivolous lawsuit, and win that one too.

David Dreier has done everything he could as a Repuke house leader to block Democrats from having a say in formulating House bills. Here's hoping he loses big in this election. If a right wing talk show wants to help defeat him, the more the better. Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

6. Lynn, I wish you had put David Dreier in the subject line
helps to define the search...this is the
same story from front page of the Pasadena StarNews
today which I'll post in the California section.

http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/Stories/0,1413,206~22097~2501836,00.html

snip-

According to the complaint, John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, hosts of the afternoon John and Ken Show'' on KFI, have made unlawful campaign contributions by making repeated on-air appeals for listeners to reject Dreier and elect Cynthia Matthews on Nov. 2.

Further, KFI is accused of violating federal campaign law by paying for broadcasts that endorse the defeat of a federal candidate within 120 days of an election. The John and Ken Show has become nothing but a political diatribe,'' states the complaint, which was filed Oct. 14. This behavior is illegal and must be appropriately punished.''

snip

Conservative AM talk radio has been a reliable voice for the Republican Party, from the relentless Clinton bashing of Rush Limbaugh in the 1990s to the criticisms of California Gov. Gray Davis.

Dreier was a top adviser for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in his campaign to replace Davis and appeared on the John and Ken Show several times to promote the recall effort. Now that the tables have been turned and an influential Republican is under attack, the Republican Party wants to pull the plug, Kobylt said.
