Jim Hightower: Happy days are here again!
http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2004/10/29/grassro...
Oct. 29, 2004 | Hey, come on progressives, buck up! There's been too much doom and gloom -- especially among inside-the-Beltway progressives -- about Kerry's chances on Nov. 2. Maybe they inherited an extra dour gene, or maybe they're spending too much time listening to pollsters and pundits. Of course there's the occasional discouraging campaign news, but don't wallow in it, for there's also greatly encouraging news.

Yes, I know that some polls have shown Bush running even with Kerry or ahead -- but the pollsters are vastly undercounting anti-Bush votes.

Yes, I know that Kerry's charisma quotient ranks somewhere between that of Al Gore and Michael Dukakis -- but John's been perking up lately, showing a bit of populist passion and striking some solid blows.

1. Personally.
I think Kerry is more charismatic than either Dukakis or Gore.

3. Back when Kerry was in contention for
Gore's VP, the media fell all over themselves talking about K's charisma. What happened? Whores.

4. I. Love. Jim Hightower.
He's the best Dem guy since Will Rogers.

I LOVE him!

His spots on AAR are the highlight of my commute, well, right after "The Unfiltered News!"

5. Interesting read.. TIRED of the cheap joke at Kerry's expense..
This is getting SO old: "Kerry's charisma quotient ranks somewhere between that of Al Gore and Michael Dukakis" It's like the Al Gore invented the internet meme. It's tired, and it's wrong.

Kerry is fit, energetic, intelligent, warm, funny, and engaging. I am NOT a Kerry apologist, I happen to have formed that opinion by watching him this election season. I was a Deaniac, who had less than no interest in Kerry during the primaries. Kerry has won me over.. I just don't see the charisma thing at all! I'd LOVE to hang out with Kerry over a beer and pizza (though I don't drink beer).

I just think that when writers use tired cliches to open a story, they alienate, and diminish what's inside the story. Going for the cheap joke is always a mistake.

6. Exactly! I was whistling that tune leaving
the early voting precinct this morning.

Pretty good turnout for the last day here in NC. I arrived 45min before opening, still ~100 or so in line. Finally got to the id table, and after giving my reg. card and info, it pops up that i'd already voted! By absentee. . . ummmm, no i haven't.

So i had to stand aside while they made phone calls, checked again. All the while the tinfoilhat was tightening on my head, and i was trying to remember phone numbers to alert investigations into WHO/WHERE/WHEN the absentee ballot was sent and how to find the %*@# who had taken my voting privileges away...

turned out to be a glitch :) and then i got my ballot.

left whistling HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN.

ya gotta have faith,
dp
