S.C., Va. "NAACP" warns voters who owe parking tickets they face arrest
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 03:29 PM by plastic_turkeys
COLUMBIA, S.C. - A bogus letter circulating in South Carolina, purporting to be from the NAACP, threatens the arrest of voters who have outstanding parking tickets or failed to pay child support. The NAACP said Friday the letter is a scare tactic and called for an investigation.

"I'm outraged," said Jill Miller, director of the Charleston County Board of Election and Voter Registration. "This is so bogus."

The Rev. Joe Darby, vice president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said he received the one-page letter — which had a Columbia postmark with no return address — at his Charleston home.

He said it was an attempt to frighten minorities from voting Tuesday because the letter-writer assumes black people are in trouble with the law.

The letter also says voters must have a credit check, provide two forms of photo identification, a Social Security card, a voter registration card and a handwriting sample.

2. Same Technique Used in Baltimore in 2002
According to People for the American Way, this exact same method was used in Black neighborhoods in Baltimore in 2002 during a close governor's race. Flyers were distributed to make sure that people had paid up all of the their parking tickets, utility bills, tax bills, etc. so that they could vote. Some of the flyers told people to vote - but the wrong Tuesday. The Republican defeated an incumbent Democrat.

6. I'm worried for voter intimidation
People who believe this would think they would just face arrest early if they voted early.

13. lol, 72 hour blitz(krieg)
I figured he'd widely distribute *'s plan for repairing the economy, creating jobs, ending the war and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. But if you don't have a SINGLE FUCKING ONE of those things, i guess you just have to try to stop people from voting. :grr:

10. The good news in this:
The BFEE must be running totally scared if they need to resort to this crap in SC. As I've mentioned before, I'm not seeing near as many Bush/Cheney signs and bumperstickers here in upstate SC (the extra conservative corner of a conservative state) as I did 4 years ago. Their support is weak at best. This state has been totally screwed by the economic downturn and jobs shipped overseas.
