Kerry Gets Bin Laden Bounce
I honestly thought that Kerry was finished after the Bin Laden tape came out. Kerry's jump in these tracking polls, though, was all a result of polling from last night...AFTER the Bin Laden tape hit the airwaves. Maybe the American people have some common sense after all. Tomorrow's numbers are CRITICAL.

5. Because of Calbe News Media Perception
. . . which has been part of a Rovian based perception, rather than the reality based perception. Maybe when people got hot and thirsty, they decided for once to NOT call for Karl Rove. :P

10. Someone's got another thread going saying that the
Cable News Networks have now taken OBL off the front pages of their web pages. Seems it's not spinning for their boy like they thought it would. As someone here said earlier in the day, Instant Karma.

29. Again, for the umpteenth time .. Very Few People Watch Cable News!
In the grand scope of the media, the cable news viewers are miniscule. Only political junkies watch it. And most political junkies think for themselves.

8. Cynicism
I thought it would knock off Kerry's momentum and give Bush some badly needed breathing room. Kerry had Bush on the ropes, and - cross your fingers - it looks like that still may be the case.

that this president didn't do his job. Bin Laden is alive and surprising well and we're too tied up in Iraq to go after him.

16. Osama and Rove both outsmarted themselves
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 05:53 PM by rocknation
According to the Daily News, the Bush camp consider the tape to be a "gift" of sorts because "anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush." But if that's so, why did the Bush regime try to suppress its broadcast? My guess is that once he learned what was on the tape, Rove thought he could spin it to Bush's advantage, and had the State Department make what he knew would be empty gesture to cover his tracks. One little flaw in his logic, though--the very existence of the tape reminds the public that bin Laden is still alive and still at large. And Osama certainly didn't look as though he's living in constant fear of being betrayed or ambushed!

Someone at Fox News suggested that Osama might as well have been wearing a Kerry-Edwards button, and they were right--but for the wrong reason. Osama's statement that the American people would be held responsible for the leader they choose certainly comes across as a backhanded endorsement of Kerry. But why would Osama gamble on Kerry's taking a more effective stance against him, especially if can get a REAL global coalition behind him? With Bush in office, Osama has a human Al-Qaeda recruitment poster who values oil over blood--and, by the way, who has been unable to catch him. So Osama did the most logical thing--implied he preferred Kerry so we'd get insulted and vote for Bush in retaliation. Goodness knows he has every reason to believe that we're too dumb to figure that out.

If the tracking polls are any indication, the voters have decided that their "nervousness" about national security will only escalate without a new president. I'd say that Rove and Osama have BOTH struck out with this tape--and that when Bush steps up to the plate on Tuesday, we'll retire the side!

I thought exactly the same thing. I think Kerry should be mentioning it, forcing the media to talk about it. Let it simmer on the back burner that after all the money, the wars, and all the rest, that Bush doesn't seem to care that the actual perpetrator of 9/11 is still at large and unpunished.

You know, that just can't go down too well with anyone, no matter how much they like Bush. And that's why this is helping Kerry.

23. Bush and the media made it worse
Somehow THEY were afraid of this and really had no spin for it, no bluff, no misdirection. Bush even stupidly, and I mean honest to god stupidly, made a terse, agitated speech on a tarmac, while Kerry had the relaxed calm demeanor of a leader.

Another extra gift from Bush, digging his own grave.

He looks more and more like someone who has been read his own obituary.

25. The Republicans Overplayed This
The smugness of the right to think that this tape would help them probably turned some voters *OFF* of the Republicans. "Why are they *HAPPY* that Osama is making threats?" some may ask themselves.

Had they just left it alone, i think it would have been a much bigger help to the Republicans. Instead, they jumped all over it, making people question why the right thinks Osama's reappearance is a good thing.

The inner circle was clearly dismayed that this popped up at all. Now we have silence, a clear sign that the official noise machine doesn't even want to spin this.

27. Are you kidding? The polls are meaningless this point.
2000 showed us that. And these polls aren't even taking into consideration the masses of new voters that are voting Democratic this year. I expect some big surprises in the Senate and House races, too.

33. Think about it: OBL has become "Voldemort" to BushCo
"He who cannot be named". Even in the debates, * could barely bring himself to utter Osama's name. All he's been able to squawk for years now is "Saddam, Saddam, Saddam..." No, bushco wants America to forget about the REAL villain behind 9/11. Remembering him leads to questions, and that can't be tolerated.
