Zogby: Dean losing because people are looking for a winner |

He essentially said this on Hardball.

Edwards, Clark, Kerry, Gep = possible winners
Dean- Already painted as a Dukakis, McGovern, and this scares the hell out of the other 80% of Democrats.

6. None of the prowar Democratic candidates can beat Bush |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-16-04 07:14 PM by IndianaGreen
They won't be able to get the support of the committed antiwar voters. In a close election, the antiwar vote will make the difference between winning and losing.

8. Yeah but Clark isn't running in Iowa |
|
So they have to vote for a pro-war candidate if they want Dean to lose the caucus.

9. ??? So then, the antiwar voters will just not vote??? |
|
I can't imagine that; knowing as they must, that a ligitimately elected bush would certainly start another war, they would do nothing on election day to prevent this???

12. I wouldn't get too excited. |

IMO, 2000 taught a lesson to those people willing to throw away their vote by voting 3rd party or not voting at all. Certainly, there are still some who prefer to protest with their votes, but I believe that most of them will now prefer using their vote effectively.

10. You're overestimating the "committed antiwar vote" |
|
A majority of likely Dem voters want a candidate that voted for IWR. Of the minority that prefer an "antiwar" Dem, only a few are "commited antiwar voters"

I am very anti-Iraq also, but if Clark loses the nod, and Edwards goes down the tubes, Kerry is my #3 guy. Look, lots of people bought the WMD lie... and maybe, just maybe, in light of Bush playing on our 9/11 fears, Kerry made a decision he might not make today. I think a lot of us are bitter about being lied to, and I'm certain Kerry is one of them. After all, he's running to put Bush out of office, right? $6 million of his own dollars put up sounds like a pretty strong statement against Bush policies to me.
Good luck tomorrow, btw.

I'm not exactly thrilled over our Iraqi adventure either, but I will have no problem voting for a Dem who voted for IWR. In fact, my preferred candidate is Kerry, who voted for IWR.

23. Do you think there are more people like you in America or more people... |
|
...combined who (1) don't care about this issue, (2) care about another issue (like middle class opportunity) way more, and/or (3) actually like a Dem who was willing to go with acting strong when there was a perceived close call between threat and no threat?

27. Since we're already in it |
|
It seems to me that it's a moot point. We all know we were duped...lied to...manipulated...
But we're over it, and we're ready for a positive message for America. We're ready to take back America. We have the power. We forgive our candidates past failures, and we focus on their future promise.

|
Yet only 12-13% thinks Democrats can't win. He believes people are moving away from Dean because of this.

20. I saw a similar article |
|
showing Dean's unfavorable rating dropping down to 34%. The article further stated that a candidate is considered unelectable if they are at 40% (Hillary currently at 47%.)
That being said, the way the tides are turning as of late, that rating can (and probably will) change. No one is out of the race...

No offense intended, but I've found that the various partisans here at DU tend to add their own 'spin' to someone's statement about a candidate they don't care for.

15. To the best of my recollection |
|
He stated it in the following fashion:
As part of their polling questions, they asked if the respondent believed Dean could beat Bush - 30% did not believe he could. He then followed up with a question which was (paraphrasing) "do you think any of the other candidates could beat Bush", and only 12-15% of the respondents did not believe any other candidate couldn't.
He then made the statement that this was why Dean was losing support, due to many folks being skeptical of his GE chances against Bush.
Hope this helps - if anyone can add to this please do.

8. If you make a factual assertion about a candidate that is not generally accepted to be true, you must provide a link to a reputable source to back up your claim. Allegedly "innocent" questions which are actually an underhanded effort to spread rumors are not allowed. If you really need to know the answer to your question, try Google.
