Endorsement Tally: Kerry 186, * 151
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 07:50 PM by sonicx
NEW YORK In the relative calm before the final editorial blast of the election season on Sunday, President George W. Bush has picked up a key paper in Minnesota while Senator John Kerry made gains in Florida and continues to lead in our overall tally.

In all, Bush gets 13 new papers added to our tally today as his opponent wins 11, but Kerry continues to lead in the overall count by 186 to 151. Kerry also holds a wide lead in circulation of supporting papers, by about 19 million to almost 13 million.

Kerry, however, gained the St. Cloud Times in the same state. He also picked up one more paper that had backed Bush in 2000, bringing that total for him to 42. Bush has picked up only six papers that endorsed Al Gore then.

In addition, four other papers switched from pro-Bush in 2000 to neutral today, bringing that overall total to at least 15. Two of them are in another battleground state, Florida: the Stuart News and Jupiter Tribune. Kerry also picked up the Fort Pierce Tribune and has virtually swept that key state's mid-sized and larger papers.

These probably don't influence anyone, but they at least show that people's minds have changed about * since 2000.

Kerry's the 3rd dem candidate ever (well...since 1940 i should say) to lead endorsements, btw (the other 2 became president).

1. I hope this is a good omen
Even though newspaper endorsements usually have way more effect on local races, just a little influence in the right places would go a long way.

2. Who were the other two dems?
My guess:

FDR, LBJ

4. Ah that's right
FDR had the media against him when he was first elected because big corporations owned it all - not unlike where we're headed again.
