5. I am faced with "Anyone But Kerry" |
|
This is what my RW friends now say, especially after the debates (the husband is a lawyer -- he knows who wins a debate when he sees it). I am now just working on them, trying to get them not to vote at all.
I find the following works well for me:
"Well, Dubya is no Reagan, that's for sure. But I don't like Kerry either, so I'm just not going to vote." Anything to keep them home on election day.

13. My Dad voted * in 2000 and left the President part blank in his |

ballot this year. He wouldn't vote for Kerry because of the anti-war stuff.
An hour or so ago I flipped by Faux and saw a commercial with a man and woman talking over the kitchen table. He says a real conservative wouldn't be spending so much and causing deficits, invading countries that didn't attack use, etc. Then he says "But I can't vote for Kerry". His wife says "Don't, vote for Badernik (sp?) the Libertarian candidate.
I liked it and I was glad they were advertising on Faux.

16. Im a Christian, loved F-9/11, voted 4 Kerry |
|
I'm a serious Christian, often more strict than my Right Winger Christian conservative friends, voted for Bush in 2000, and still cannot for the life of me understand how any conscientious person can vote for a Bush. I am shocked that these guys who get all worked up, (and correctly so), about the heinous acts of abortions but remain callously indifferent to the tens of thousands of deaths of noncombatant Iraqis because of Bush's rush to war.
I paid for one of these friends to see F-9/11 because he "didn't want that vile Michael Moore to get a dime of his money." He was riveted to the movie screen (when he wasn't making diarhea runs to the bathroom). He was floored. He saw nothing wrong or misleading about F-9/11. He was so moved by those distraught Iraqi women - he finally began to realize that Iraqis are people, too. And that they have feelings! He decided he wouldn't be voting this time around.
I bought "The Passion" and "F-9/11" at the same time. I loved them both but had the feeling that I was among the few who did.
Another close (Rightwinger Christian) friend watched F-9/11 and thought it was funny and honestly informative. But, unphased, he was shocked that I had (early voted) for Kerry. He wants to wait till Tuesday to "vote with everybody else." I get the impression that he is more interested in conforming than contemplative conviction.

19. I, too, consider myself a Christian |
|
And until recently I attended a fairly liberal church (I mentioned in some other post that I am an Evangelical Lutheran). They're building a new sanctuary since our congregation has grown so much, and I like neither small spaces nor large crowds, so I've pretty much stopped going until the construction is finished.
I still can't bring myself to watch "Passion," though. Too many people describe it as a "two and a half hour snuff film." Then again, I'm rather non-conformist; unlike the fundamentalist denominations, I would much rather focus upon Jesus' LIFE rather than his death. I see too much emphasis on "accepting Christ into your heart" and not nearly enough upon trying to live your life as Christ would have wanted you to live it. For me, the ressurection is a relatively small part of the New Testament. This is, in effect, my problem with so much of the fundamentalist mentality.
It's my honest impression that nayone who has actually read the entirely of the New Testament -- as opposed to what their preacher or small-group leader has TOLD them to focus on -- would at least today vote for Kerry. Even my Southern Babtist friends who are voting for Bush admit that it is not within Christ's teachings, but for their own financial interests, that they are voting for Bush. They're counting on having "accepted Jesus as their savior" to get them into heaven. I happen to thing that there's way more than speaking the words, even meaning them, involved in getting through heaven's doors.
Sorry for the rant, and welcome to DU!

20. Also, about your point on abortion |
|
I don't blame you for getting "worked up." While I don't see the termination of a fetus in the first half of pregnancy as murder, I can respect the views of those who do. I think that there's a place for anti-abortion advocates within the Democratic party, and even on DU (though it is certainly not popular around here :) ).
For the record, my church's employee health plan covers abortions, and I have no problem with this, as long as it's in the early stages of pregnancy. There's a big difference between a baby and the POTENTIAL for being a baby, IMO. My church also accepts homosexuals, and has no problems with teaching evolution. There is more to being a Christian than what one learns in one's average Pentecostal church.

My biggest hope is on a person who plans on voting for Bush because she thinks Kerry will cut and run. Some story about her husband being in Vietnam.

yesterday someone tried to tell me that people who had seen F 9/11 had switched their vote to Bush by a 3 to 1 margin. It is so frustrating when they just spout garbage like that...they never have any proof....they just "know". I don't like it, but I am beginning to hate some of these idiots.

They say shit like this because they know it annoys people. That's pretty much the point. It's why they say shit like "love it or leave it" - they know that you can dissent in this country, they're just trying to bug the shit out of you. If they were out to convince, they'd come prepared, or at least know where they could get the information. Just laugh it off and say "I reeeeeeeeeally doubt that". Get them to beg you about whether or not it's true. Don't beg them to believe you.
