2.  I wonder why Cuomo never ran for Pres?
He was heavily recruited in '92.

6. In his own words:
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 10:26 PM by Blasphemer
"I felt, The state’s in trouble -- this is no time to leave. So I was trying to make a fifteen-month budget. The Republicans said no. On December 20, 1991, as a jet with its engine running waited on a runway in Albany to take him to New Hampshire for the announcement of his candidacy, Cuomo decided not to run for president. If I had left for New Hampshire without a budget, just imagine what the media would have done. And they would have been right. They would have said, “How dare you come to New Hampshire and say, ‘The problem with America is the economy,’ when you don’t even have a budget for your state -- and it’s required by law?’” "

"That wasn’t the only issue. Everything was an issue. The Mafia is a question every time an Italian raises his head. One guy (I won’t mention his name because he’s a fellow I like a lot, a famous national columnist) did a column that said, “He’s a terrific guy, Cuomo, but there are no Marios down South.” Like I would be some kind of strange beast in the South because my name sounds like an oratorio. What he really meant was Italian. But I never had a problem. People like Rudy Giuliani, God bless him, who was United States Attorney and who was not a political booster of mine by any means, and was ambitious for himself, said, “Look, nobody knows better than I do: This guy is golden.” And that’s very important to me. That reputation that I brought out of my political life is extremely important to me."

Maybe there was more to it, but, at least publically, he felt the time was wrong for him considering his obligations to the state of NY. As a New Yorker (at the time), I was really hoping he would run. It's a shame - Washington could use someone like him, if not as President then in some other capacity.

9. I think he was worried the GOP attack machine would go after
him for supposed "mafia ties" and paint him as an Italian mobster or something. That was the rumour anyway, not sure if there was any truth to it.

3. Why, oh, why hasn't Cuomo run for President?
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 10:20 PM by clydefrand
I think he is so sensible sounding and such a wonderful speaker! I wanted him to run several years ago, but he wouldn't. Does he have a skeleton or two in his closet that he doesn't want to reveal?

7. Yeah...I remember a while back
on the Kerry boards we were speculating about Cuomo or Biden joining Kerry on the ticket as vp. However, someone posted that both Cuomo and Biden had some things in their past. Sorry I can't remember exactly what is was though..

14. He had a lot of BAD baggage.
My parents, who still lived in NY nad are STAUNCH Democrats, couldn't stand the guy by the time the election came around.

TONS of bad press on the guy, even if a lot of it was unfair and untrue, it sunk in.

I was shocked, and still never understood their reasons, because I thought Cuomo was just great.

Made me stop and think because I really respected my Parents' opinions.

Still never quite understood why.

4. Could have used his response on religion today!

I visit a parent of twins message board, that is overrun with fundies that get their panties in a bunch anytime you disagree with them over religion...

Funny thing is - I'm a chrisitian - but I'm sick of them graphically describing abortion, telling people that they are basically "less than" for being gay - and condemning anyone that doesn't believe what they do to hell... with scripture mind you!

It's usually just a big PMS fight - until one of us "sinners" tells them off - to which we aptly get reported and slapped on the hands. ARGH!

ETA: And you can NEVER discuss politics with them - it's easier with a room full of second graders... They understand what a lie is - LOL.

8. I don't understand how message boards
that are supposed to be non-political can get so crazy. You should see some of the crap that goes on at this message board for owners of Boston Terriers. Whew, some of those folks can be really scary!!!

10. The next time they talk about abortion...if they condemn all
abortions, ask them a few questions.

Do you think a woman should have an abortion or die if she has a tubal pregnancy?

Do you think a young, small girl who was brutually raped by a family member or other should carry to term a child that she can't afford or have the knowledge to raise it? What if giving birth would kill her? Is that alright?

Suppose your daughter were raped, would you deny her an abortion? Would you take care of her child?

Suppose a newly widowed woman were pregnant and had several other children and her doctor told her that she would die because of the heart problem she had developed. Should she die and leave her other children with no one to care for them?

People who are so narrow minded about abortion don't stop to think of all the reasons that women get them.

13. Sadly, infuriatingly, they would not care
I've heard these people talk--the fetus is the only important consideration. They simply don't care about the mother. Some would say, "She's in God's hands" and that covers it for them. I'm desperately hoping that if the day comes these fundies succeed in making abortion illegal, they will focus all their energies on reaching the children with the gospel, since their belief system says that only born-again Christians will enter heaven. Otherwise, all humans are doomed to eternity in hell. Would be nice, too, if they could give some time and attention and exercise some compassion to helping the children after they're born, since many find themselves in ugly abusive situations totally out of their control and that they don't deserve. Just a thought...

Meantime, let's DEFEAT BUSH!!

11. Welcome to DU, kittycat!
I too am a Christian and right now I'm taking a "hiatus" from the church and Bible study I've been attending because I just cannot listen to any more of the rhetoric to which I'm subjected by the pastor and others. I would never begin to argue with them, because I simply don't understand their adoration of the "man of faith", Bush. I have a 2nd-grade grandson and you're right--they do know what a LIE is, unlike our President. I think the man has some very serious mental problems. I hope he is saved, as he has claimed to be, but maybe he should read the Bible, the part where it says "by their fruits you shall know them." Oh and then there's the one about not bearing false witness...

Let's defeat Bush Tuesday. Can't happen soon enough!

12. Sounds like my story
I attended church regularly until a few months ago. I stopped going because I just couldn't take all the political commentary favorable to the shrub.

And, because one of my very good friends is gay, I couldn't stand the pastor's preaching against homosexuality.

I may never go back to church, even after Kerry wins.

15. I'm going back
I'm not going to Mass until after the election is over but then I'll be back. Because if I don't, then I've abandoned the Church I love to the bigots and extremists. It may be a difficult row to hoe but I'll fight on. And I believe the Church will eventually see the light - it may be after I'm dead but it will happen.

Look, it took hundreds of years but they eventually forgave Galileo for being right. ;-)

5. Mario is one of the best. I loved his explaination on religion.
He said "One candidate says don't force me to have an abortion, don't force me to marry a same sex partner and always follow your religion of choice. The other candidate says you must believe in MY religion and it's practices. I vote for the Democrat!"
