An "Outrageous" AppointmentEarlier today, President Bush made an end-run around the Senate and used a recess appointment to elevate Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Senate Democrats have blocked Pickering's appointment for most of the last two years, arguing that Pickering's views were too extreme to merit appointment to a higher court. Pickering's appointment is valid until the next Congress is seated in January, 2005.
John Kerry issued the following statement on Bush's use of a recess appointment to bypass the Senate:
“Last year on Martin Luther King's birthday, George Bush fought to roll back affirmative action. It is outrageous that yet again, one day after laying a wreath on Martin Luther King's grave, George W. Bush is unilaterally installing a man on a federal appeals court who advocated tirelessly on behalf of a cross-burner. Yet again, this Bush Administration is ignoring the will of the people and threatening civil rights on behalf of right wing ideologues. We need a President who respects the people and fights for equal opportunity for every American.”
