...when you see some people trying to decipher Iran's endorsement of Bush or OBL's criticism of Bush?:

The Right would have us believe that Iran's endorsement of Bush was made to help Kerry and that OBL's criticism of Bush also somehow reflects badly on Kerry because Iran was clearly trying to use reverse psychology but OBL was clearly being sincere... Sigh.

I think it's fruitless to try to get inside the minds of Iran leaders or OBL. We can't possibly know what they were trying to accomplish if we just look at their statements in the absence of other information. It makes more sense to look at Bush's policies and the policies Kerry plans to implement and decide which plans are more likely to help or harm our enemies.

But it arguably makes even more sense to forget about trying to figure out who Iran or OBL want as president and just focus on choosing the president who would best serve the American people. Even if we could get inside the minds of our enemies and discover who they really prefer, is it a "given" that the opposite choice would necessarily be the better choice for Americans? Iran and OBL may not even be correct in their assessment of who would be "worse" for them. America must choose its own president based on what is best for America. Why give our enemies any say in it -- even to the extent of basing our choice on the opposite of what we think they want?
