1. yes!
Scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel, reenergize, and rewind
I give sight to the blind, mind sight through the mind
I ostracize my right to express when I feel it's time
It's just all in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say to fight you take it as I知 gonna whip someone's ass
If you don't understand don't even bother to ask
A father who has grown up with a fatherless past
Who has blown up now to rap phenomenon that has
Or at least shows no difficulty multi task
And juggling both, perhaps mastered his craft slash
Entrepreneur who has held long too few more rap acts
Who has had a few obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his career typical manure moving past that
Mister kiss his ass crack, he's a class act
Rubber band man, yea he just snaps back

Come along, follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark, that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength,
Come with me, and I won't stear you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
Till the light, at the end, of the tunnel, we gonna fight,
We gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march through the swamp
We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors

To the people up top, on the side and the middle,
Come together, let's all bomb and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build, from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people, some white and some black
Don't matter what color, all that matters is we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause, no matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us, they can't, we're stronger now more then ever,
They tell us no we say yea, they tell us stop we say go,
Rebel with a rebel yell, raise hell we gonna let em know
Stomp, push up, mush, fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home come on just . . .

We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors, come on

Imagine it pouring, it's raining down on us,
Mosh pits outside the oval office
Someone's trying to tell us something, maybe this is God just saying
we're responsible for this monster, this coward, that we have empowered
This is Bin Laden, look at his head nodding,
How could we allow something like this, Without pumping our fist
Now this is our, final hour
Let me be the voice, and your strength, and your choice
Let me simplify the rhyme, just to amplify the noise
Try to amplify the times it, and multiply it by six
Teen million people are equal of this high pitch
Maybe we can reach Al Quaida through my speech
Let the President answer on high anarchy
Strap him with AK-47, let him go
Fight his own war, let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our soil
No more psychological warfare to trick us to think that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes, it's all lies, the stars and stripes
They've been swiped, washed out and wiped,
And Replaced with his own face, mosh now or die
If I get sniped tonight you'll know why, because I told you to fight

So come along, follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark, that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength,
Come with me, and I won't stear you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
Till the light, at the end, of the tunnel, we gonna fight,
We gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march through the swamp
We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors

And as we proceed, to mosh through this desert storm, in these closing statements, if they should argue, let us beg to differ, as we set aside our differences, and assemble our own army, to disarm this weapon of mass destruction that we call our president, for the present, and mosh for the future of our next generation, to speak and be heard, Mr. President, Mr. Senator

How would it even be possible to lip synch such a complex song, and what would be the point?

What a bizarre accusation to make.

54. he WAS lip-synching...
He was lip-synching--or at the very least accompanied by a very thick backing track. There were times when he was quite obviously not speaking, but the track was still going--not like it's a big deal. He quite plainly had about seven overdubs accompanying his voice, so it's not like he was hiding it.

I love DU, but you do have to be careful. Too bad, but I understand. We monitor the freepers and they monitor us. We have to monitor ourselves and the moderators are our political Super-Egos.

Things will be better after 11/2, relaxing in the warm, victorious glow. What a wonderful morning we will awake to on 11/3.

Until then, I guess we have to acknowledge this M&M jerk-off as some sort of heroic ally. As if we need him. But... Whatcha gonna do?

Unfortunately, it seems the SNL stage is not set up for live performances. I would assume that everyone that goes on has to lip sync. It really doesn't matter unless they play the wrong song.

15. Damn. That's some heavy shit! Eminem gives Chimp a backhanded bitchslap!
Big time number!

Kind of harkens me back to THE one that set the standard -

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

72. Correct.
It's no different than having back up singers. He uses a track to create vocal effects, just like there is a track with his background music, which his DJ controls.

It doesn't take anything away from his live performance, since he is still rapping in real time. He isn't lip sycnching, his background track only adds the effects where they are needed, like at the end of a verse when there is an echo.

41. They cut at least a minute from the song

I watched it on the net so remember that it’s a good 5 minutes long.

The SNL variety show format doesnt allow that much time for a song.

It was definitely shorter than the 5 minute video. Not sure if that was all of it, but the part cut off at the end was the most notable.

47. Is that like Def Poetry??

I always wondered if the Def Poetry show on HBO was similar to the old coffee houses like you are talking about.

There has been some great stuff on those Def Poet shows.

to broaden anyone's musical horizons (as an almost 40 something dude). But for content you might check out some Public Enemy from late 80's/early 90's. They push the envelope at times, but Chuck definitely had something to say. Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos still gets my blood pumping.

I got a letter from the government
The other day
I opened and read it
It said they were suckers
They wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me given' a damn - I said never
Here is a land that never gave a damn
About a brother like me and myself
Because they never did
I wasn't wit' it, but just that very minute...
It occured to me
The suckers had authority

45. I can't believe that nearly every post on this thread is about
the %$#@&*! lip synching! It was a playback that he rapped with-big deal. Hell, I'm just glad they got the song on television before the election. A big "in your face" to BushCo!

Ignore that flame war, and take a look at the posts just above yours.

77. Yes, fine, it was a lip sync.
Anyone not admitting the fact that this was rapped over a very strong backing track is just fooling themselves. That being said, I really couldn't give a damn. Unlike Ashlee's Simpson's trite consumeristic rubbish, which loses all value when lip-synched, Eminem actually had something to say. The fact that the words kept coming with no appreciable difference in sound when his mouth was closed or the mic was lowered really doesn't make a whole lot of difference as far as what was said. I'm just glad the thing got played on as large a venue as SNL. I wouldn't have cared if they had cranked it out of an old 45 RPM Victrola machine while Eminem sat and gave himself a manicure, as long as the words were heard.

Eminem has a dubious past, but people can change, and people can learn to contribute. His song is certainly a significant contribution, and in my mind it goes a long way toward erasing any ugliness in the past.

It was lip-synched? Yep, it sure was... and so what? This is a political statement, the words are what is important, whether from a backing track or anything else. This ain't Ashlee Simpsons vapid crap, which has no value aside from the appeal of the performer.
